But for me, it was far from it because I recently got a puppy! 🐶 My boring job was earning me enough to buy him toys, a bed, and everything he needed. (my first job - 2019) Even if your job feels monotonous or a bit toxic, remember that it’s providing food and happiness for you and your family. It might be exhausting, but it’s worth it until you find something better. You know that feeling That something isn't quite right?? It’ll never go away There aren’t enough distractions in the world to make it go away I had everything I was “meant” to have. Everything And yet I always felt like something was missing Something wasn’t quite right. Like I wasn’t quite where I was meant to be. And I tried to fill that feeling with SO many distractions. But it always came back. Until the day I decided to stop distracting myself and start listening instead. So I simply asked it 'what do you want??' And it screamed back to me what I knew deep down I don’t want to work in a company. I don’t want to work for someone else, I don’t want to do the corporate 9-5. I want to do something different! And it scared the crap out of me. Because finally I was accepting something I’d been ignoring for most of my life I wanted a different type of life to most people around me. And as scary as that was It was no scarier than the idea of staying in my current life, accepting that I’d always feel like something was missing. So stop running from that feeling Instead start listening and see what it has to tell you And then, just take baby steps to explore. I hate LinkedIn. I’ve had this account for around two years. It has been the worst thing I’ve ever done for my professional life. It hasn’t been great for my personal life either. Prior to 2021, I never cared what my job looked like to other people. I cared about whether it brought me joy, whether it made someone else’s day better or brighter, whether I could pay my bills, whether my personal time was, in fact, mine. Ever since I came here, I’ve started worrying about career trajectory and how that might be perceived. I’ve ignored so many red flags in interviews and workplaces. I’ve started believing that linear progress and more zeros on my pay check was what success looked like. Gross. Gross gross gross. I’ve decided I’m going to stick around, but I’m making a few changes. I’m not here to advertise what I’m doing for work, that’s between me and my happiness. LinkedIn, for me at least, is going to become a place to keep in touch with old work pals and read about cool ideas and innovation and humanity and how we’re making this planet a better place to be. Please stop reducing your worth as a human being to what you do for 40 hours a week to earn a crust. One Day ➡️ One month Building a substantial body of work takes a long time- a lifetime, but u dont need that time all in one big chunk. So forget about decades, years and months. Focus on days. The day is the only unit of time that I can really get my head around. Days has a rhythm. Go back to your documentation and find little peice of your day that u can share. If you’re in the ealry stages, share your influences and what’s inspiring you. A daily dispatch is better than resume or a portfolio because it shows what we’re working on right now. Social media sites are the perfect to share daily updates, dont show your lunch or your latte; show your work. Dont worry about everything you post being perfect Don’t say you dont have enough time, we’re all busy, but we all get 24 hrs a day. “ One day at a time. It sounds so simple.
