It's been some time since posting here but I would be remiss not to use this opportunity to share about a cause near and dear to my heart. As some of you may know, I have been on the After School All Stars (ASAS) board for almost 2 years. ASAS Puget Sound provides free, comprehensive after-school and summer programs that keep students safe and help them succeed in school and life. We are raising funds for After-School All-Stars Puget Sound through our annual year-end appeal. ASAS is one of the country's largest nonprofit organizations working to close the opportunity gap for low-income youth. If it wasn't for ASAS, these students could potentially be in unsafe environments or home-alone at a young age. By ethnicity, the top two groups we serve are Black/African American, Hispanic/Latinx and Asian American populations - populations that are historically underserved. My DEI people - the statistics tell the story, in order to pave the way for an equitable future and to level the playing field, we need to strive to support these communities. 🗣️ We're Tackling Inequal Access to Education As per the buildOn methodology, it's a priority in all Magic Future Foundation schools that girls and boys are educated in equal numbers. So far, in our 25 schools built, 4,154 girls and 4,132 boys have been enrolled. Excuse me, The PRSA Foundation… but $130,000 in relation to *what*? The Better Business Bureau’s “standard seeks to assure donors that the majority of a charity’s activities (defined as 65% of a charity’s total expenses in the past fiscal year) are directed to its program services.” Transparency is not the PRSA Foundation’s forte. Consequently, this GuideStar link to the Foundation’s IRS Form 990 filing (2021) from two years ago is the most recent one we have documenting the Foundation’s % of expenses actually dedicated to its stated “diversity” mission. In 2021, only 41% ($60,913) of total expenses ($146,700) were dedicated to grants / scholarships. In 2020, only 23% ($65,506) of total expenses ($277,233) were thus dedicated. “Other” expenses are largely used to prop up the PRSA, Inc., business league, which lost well into the seven figures in member dollars for the same time period. When I asked questions in 2020 of CFO Philip Bonaventura and then-Foundation President Joe Cohen about what was going on, I was stonewalled for months and then retaliated against. Yet, Black-founded organizations are systemically underfunded. Americans give $450 billion to charity each year, but only a tiny fraction of that goes to Black organizations. Data shows us from individual donors, to large corporate and institutional grantmaking, Black-founded and led organizations have experienced a general lack and routine disinvestment."
