Nicasa Behavioral Health Services' Elizabeth Thielen and The Way Back Inn, Inc.'s Anita Pindiur presented at the Illinois Association of Problem-Solving Courts (ILASPC) 2023 Conference in Normal, IL. Feedback from attendees: "Excellent!" " So far, this has been the best presentation of the whole conference. These ladies know how to put together a PowerPoint. The video clips were a great addition." The annual conference explores the latest research and issues of justice-involved individuals with behavioral health needs. Elizabeth and Anita presented "Gambling Use Disorders and Criminal Behavior" on Thursday. ILASPC Mission: To promote Problem-Solving Courts in Illinois by providing education, assistance, training, and development through collaboration of behavioral health and justice systems. Problem-solving courts are comprised of teams of specially trained judges, attorneys, probation officers, coordinators, and clinical specialists. They provide wrap-around services and intensive monitoring of defendants in the criminal justice system due to substance abuse, mental health, or co-occurring disorders. The Community Reinforcement Approach (CRA) is a comprehensive behavioral program for treating substance-abuse problems. It is based on the belief that environmental contingencies can play a powerful role in encouraging or discouraging drinking or drug use. It utilizes social, recreational, familial, and vocational reinforcers to assist clients in the recovery process. Julie Blanco, LCSW, CRAADC will present on this Evidence Based treatment for individuals living with Substance Use Disorders. Since I started this company (Spanish Leads Now) I quickly came to realize the lack of resources in Spanish (many time sensitive) in several industries. One that recently came to my attention was behavior health or drug addiction treatment centers. Currently almost every single behavior health website I researched did NOT have anything in Spanish. The questions I ask are; What happens if my teenage child has substance abuse and my family only speaks Spanish? Where can I look for help? How do I look for help in this time of desperation? This is important for our field. Outreach/BD professionals are core team members and have the power to impact lives and the quality of the services we provide, but (my opinion here) we as leaders fail to engage them in healthy culture, marginalize them, fail to effectively train and set expectations for conduct, and give them autonomy without agency. No wonder we struggle with unethical conduct and high turnover. Maybe I’m wrong here. Would love to hear the good experiences too.
