It was a pleasure to speak at IEEE Power & Energy Society (PES) T&D Conference on the work the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) is doing to explore how electric vehicles (EVs) can be integrated to support Ontario's electricity system. Amongst many great topics, my key takeaways from the conference were: 1. Grid edge technologies are no longer an option but a necessity for utilities to maintain an affordable and reliable grid; regulatory frameworks can be instrumental in supporting the integration of these technologies 2. In a high inverter-based resource (IBR) future, grid forming inverters (GFM) play an important role - GFM are already available in BESS inverters today and can be a cost-effective way to support bulk power system stability under high IBR penetration 3. The process of converting power from AC to DC in level 2 and level 3 DC fast chargers can generate harmonic distortion and voltage imbalance at levels that can disrupt charging, distort utility voltage supply and damage equipment - an important consideration when installing EV supply equipment. Collaboration is key to understanding and addressing these challenges, and leveraging them as opportunities to support the energy transition.
