Ofgem to clear ‘zombie projects’ to cut grid connection queue New rules to speed up electricity grid connections for viable projects and allow stalled or speculative developers to be forced out of the queue have been announced by Ofgem. The move is a step change from the existing ‘first-come, first-served’ approach, which has led to a long queue of energy projects. The new queue management milestones will be implemented by the UK grid’s operator, National Grid ESO, from 27 November, and will terminate stalled projects that are blocking the queue for high-voltage transmission lines and means ready-to-go generation and storage to enable net zero can be fast-tracked. Actively preventing power outages - this is how #zhaw wants to stabilise our power grid in the future so that massively more renewable electricity can be transmitted safely. This can be made possible by the "stability monitor" earlyWARN, a safety and early warning system for supra-regional power grids that the researchers at #zhawIEFE are developing together with partners. The "stability monitor" earlyWARN will continuously evaluate the grid dynamic stability and can therefore detect critical conditions at an early stage. This will become increasingly important in the future, as the more wind and photovoltaic power is fed into the grid, the more "volatile" electricity production becomes. Thanks to earlyWARN, it will be possible to recognise critical conditions at an early stage and quickly initiate preventive measures before damage occurs. The collaboration with the Research Center for Energy Networks (FEN), ETH Zürich and Swissgrid AG ensures that the "stability monitor" meets the practical requirements of the transmission system operators and can be potentially put into practice quickly. The company Hitachi Energy is also on board, contributing its expertise in the scalability of such applications. This article gives a good explanation of the new two-stage grid application process in the UK. But the most interesting fact for me was the following: "[...] peak demand on the UK grid is currently only around 50GW. This is forecast to double in the years ahead but we will be very unlikely to see peaks anywhere near 700GW [which are in the queue]." Exciting news from Germany: Amprion's five 'decentralised grid booster' battery energy storage system (BESS) projects, totaling 250MW, have been approved by the regulator. These projects, part of Germany's Network Development Plan 2023-2037/45, aim to enhance grid stability and reduce system costs. The initiative, launched in 2019, involves deploying large-scale BESS at critical nodes, enabling better utilisation of existing power lines. The plan to make the grid do more with less. How can the U.S. plug more solar and wind power into the grid and meet fast-growing electricity demand when it doesn’t have enough power lines to handle all those tasks? A good start would be to adopt technologies that help get more mileage out of existing power grids, according to a new report from the Department of Energy. “Pathways to Commercial Liftoff: Innovative Grid Deployment” is the latest in a series of DOE reports examining how government funding can spur broader private-sector investment in everything from advanced geothermal power to solutions for decarbonizing heavy industry. The technologies the new report covers could increase the capacity of U.S. grids to serve peak electricity demand by 20 to 100 gigawatts, the DOE found. The high end of that range would be enough to meet the expected increase in peak electricity demands from commercial and industrial growth and the electrification of transportation and buildings by 2035 — and at “less than a quarter of the cost of conventional alternatives.” DOE’s report covers a wide array of “advanced grid solutions” technologies. #energytransition #electricgrid #usdoe #gridenhancingtechnologies #advancedgridsolutions #smartgrids

The Energy Networks Association has set out an industry action plan with six key steps to release 139GW of additional grid capacity within the next year, exceeding the 225GW needed to enable the full #decarbonization of Great Britain's electricity system by the 2035 target date. The plan includes reforms already underway as well as new proposals to strengthen the connections process, improve coordination between transmission and distribution operators, and accelerate applications to connect renewable energy projects to the grid. Industry leaders emphasized that further policy and regulatory reforms on planning, consenting, and prioritizing grid access will also be needed to achieve the rapid transition to clean energy.
