No surprise here: the generator interconnection process is "outdated, slow, unpredictable, and sorely in need of reform." But what can be done? In this blog post, Caitlin Marquis and Doug P. identify the grades from United's interconnection scorecard and explain how each RTO region can improve their interconnection processes. Perhaps the most important takeaway? Compliance with FERC Order No. 2023 won't be enough to maintain reliability and meet state clean energy goals. The short answer is a lack of proper long-term planning. The bloated interconnection queues may be the most visible issue in transitioning to clean power generation, and FERC Order 2023 represents a promising fix. But will it highlight the silly game of “whack a mole” being played in the way we execute our electric grid planning strategy? What is needed is a holistic approach that maps the key critical path items and systematically addresses them in the proper timeframes.
