🌟 Reflecting on a transformative weekend at the MPI Tennessee Chapter Mid-Year Board Retreat Placemakr 🌟 Stepping into each board meeting or retreat always brings a mix of excitement and nerves. As someone deeply passionate about MPI, I thrive in these spaces as an idea person. Yet, the shadow of past insecurities sometimes looms large, whispering doubts about my adequacy in fulfilling my role. But amidst the anxiety, I remind myself: I am a volunteer, giving my best. This time was different. As VP of Finance in a pivotal transition year for MPI, including a fiscal year extension and a new prospectus, I found myself at the center stage. I poured my heart into crafting a revamped prospectus, tirelessly seeking ways to better serve our sponsors. Presenting it was nerve-wracking; every question felt like a challenge to defend my hard work. However, amidst the scrutiny, a beautiful realization dawned upon me. Each question, each input, was a testament to the community's care and commitment. We weren't just making decisions; we were engaging in a collective effort to elevate MPI. The aftermath of the presentation held the most precious moment. A call from someone I've clashed with, expressing genuine appreciation for my work, reminded me of the power of connection and understanding. Leadership isn't just about delivering flawless presentations; it's about fostering a community where everyone feels seen and valued. This weekend reaffirmed the essence of MPI: leadership, community, inspiration, networking, and above all, lifting each other up. Another convention win for Chicago! 🎉🎊 🙌  ASAE: The Center for Association Leadership is bringing its 2028 Annual Meeting to McCormick Place! The announcement came at ASAE's Annual Meeting in Cleveland this weekend where Choose Chicago had a strong contingent present. This meeting is the world's largest annual educational and networking conference for association professionals, and it is a significant win for Chicago both in terms of direct economic impact and an opportunity to influence key decision-makers and lead to more convention wins in the future. With multiple leisure and convention industry conferences coming to Chicago over the next several years, we are establishing a pipeline of future business that will drive visitation and economic impact for decades. This sounds like a great programme from BABICM. Returning to work is often one of the biggest challenges I face in a rehabilitation package, but one of my most enjoyable areas explore. Much of our occupational identity comes from our employment, what we see when someone is unable to return to that employment is a decline in the sense of self, low mood and poor motivation. We have had some success stories but in my experience very few clients have returned to their previous paid employment, that doesn't mean we can't provide effective vocational rehabilitation. Here is the pathway I often use: ✔️ Leisure Activities - engagement in leisure can add meaning to their lives, provide motivation to access the community, develops pre-vocational skills, builds self-esteem. ✔️ Volunteering or Vocational Placement - start to introduce the idea of work again, being accountable, learning new tasks, sense of responsibility, build activity tolerance and developing social skills. ✔️ Learning - explore gaps in knowledge, do they need refresher courses in knowledge they already have, do they need to retrain in a new area? An educational course can be used to build confidence, communicate with new people or assess capability for new learning. ✔️ Employment - start looking for paid employment. They may need support with all aspects of this - CV building, job search, application forms, interview practice, discussing reasonable adjustments. This isn't set in stone and each stage provides opportunity for assessment and reflection. I would like to point out that I wouldn't only consider getting to the employment stage as success, there are many things to achieve and be celebrated at each stage - employment is not always achievable but we improve an individuals occupational identity in a number of ways 🖤🤍💛
