It will come as no surprise that I am a fan of #starwars, primarily the trilogy of Episodes 4,5&6. Perhaps more than most, it and the era of 70s and 80s #scifi had a big impact on my childhood and beyond. There are obvious clues - a career in #spacecraft operations and #robots serving human needs being foremost! But there are more subtle influences too. The films display the power of storytelling that Lucas and team used at a time of self doubt in the US psyche. It shows what can be done when a team align behind #visionary #leadership, particularly that of the underdogs and outsiders (the films’ narrative, but also how they were made). And there are some remarkable business lessons too. I’d always said that #TheEmpireStrikesBack is my favourite of the original trilogy. Did you know it wasn’t directed by George Lucas, but he #delegated arguably the most important project of his career to Irvin Kershner, whose experience with character driven storytelling brings depth to the trilogy? Did you know that Lucas #funded the project personally and via bank loans based on the merchandise revenue he had secured making Star Wars, giving him almost complete artistic authority without behind beholden to the studios? Did you know that he #marketed Star Wars by finding someone who lived and breathed the fans’ world of sci-fi and comics (read about Charles Lippincott here https://lnkd.in/e_y3sjEZ )? Lucas did this using businesses he started ( Industrial Light & Magic , Lucasfilm ). Not much more relevant to a successful business leader of one of the most successful startups ever than #vision, #delegation, #funding and #marketing / #productmarketfit !!!
