Introducing VLEO, great to see Albedo get strong support from Booz Allen Hamilton ‘s CVC. Interest that their foray into the geospatial arena is with a VLEO bet. “Albedo’s satellites and their potential to provide persistent overhead surveillance caught the eye of Booz Allen executives, leading the venture capital arm to make its first investment in a space startup” Albedo’s low-flying satellites are designed to provide surveillance from very low Earth orbit, flying at altitudes of 200 to 300 miles. That allows the satellites to gather high resolution imagery without having to expose aircraft crews or drones to the risk of being shot down by adversary weapons….Having a bird’s-eye view of the entire battlefield, updated every few minutes with 10-centimeter resolution, would be a significant improvement compared to current technologies. VLEO satellites have advantages over Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites: 1. **Improved Resolution and Accuracy**: VLEO satellites, being closer to the Earth, can capture higher resolution imagery. 2. **Reduced Latency**: The closer proximity to Earth means that communication between VLEO satellites and ground stations has lower latency. 3. **Enhanced Stealth and Detection**: VLEO satellites can be harder to detect from the ground due to their lower orbit. 4. **Increased Frequency of Passes**: VLEO satellites orbit the Earth more frequently than LEO satellites. I was recently asked how I felt about the growing trend of big companies investing in promising startups in the #defense space. In general, I'm all for it. Everyone stands to win if executed well, with clear delineations about what each company gets out of the other. That said, it can cause a lot of problems and wasted time for each company if expectations and rules of the road aren't established up front. For example, if a company like Booz Allen Hamilton invests in a startup, it may signal to that startup that Booz Allen will lead with that startup's technology over a competing offering, or even a Booz Allen solution, wherever possible. That may not be the case, since where the investment is being made--at HQ-- is quite far from where customer delivery is occurring in the markets. Additionally, the startup may feel beholden to its investor, and choose to stay loyal on a customer opportunity when partnering with a competitor is in their best interest to close the sale. So what are some best practices? 1) Be clear about what each company wants out of the relationship. 2) Be crystal clear about what each company will actually give, and what will have to be figured out on a case-by-case basis. 3) Invest in Partner Managers. They help build trust between the two organizations. and if I had a magic wand... I would make a JOINTLY HIRED Partner Manager as part of the investment--a partner manager who works for both the big corporate investor and the small startup. That person could navigate seamlessly between both entities, ensuring the sum is greater than the parts. Tagging folks below who may want to pile on with their opinions!
