National Air and Space Museum, Smithsonian Institution’s Post

The final piece of the puzzle! Yesterday, our construction team installed the final piece of stone on the outside of our museum building on the National Mall. Throughout this multi-year process, all 12,000 stones were replaced on the building's facade.

  • Three construction workers in helmets and bright orange vests on a scissor lift not the outside of the building. They reach up to secure a large piece of rectangular stone cladding on the exterior of the building. There is only one spot on the building that does not have stone on it.

Why did the stone have to be replaced?

Congratulations on the milestone. Looking forward to when we all be able to see the “ignition of the future.”
