Pepsi not only leveraged Beckham to steal fame, it also leveraged some of football's greatest athletes of all time. Pepsi's brand strategy is all about stealing fame (s/o Will Poskett 🔥 - IYKYK) and what better way to aggressively fight for market share and market-leading positioning than using the greatest talents in football? Guess who Pepsi has also endorsed? The 🐐 - Lionel Messi. They have a past of being unapologetically aggressive with celebrity endorsement, as they strive to associate Pepsi with the best in the world. Usually, you need help to distinguish yourself from your competitors. Chipotle is capitalizing on its partnership with MoneyGram Haas F1 Team partly because of Gunther Steiner's rise in stardom (although this season is going to be interesting) And their potential reach increased in the US and visibility in the Middle East. Instead of sponsors heading to teams like Red Bull, where they might have been priced out. They can run creative activations and campaigns that go against the grain. Coca-Cola, Pepsi, and the 1996 Cricket World Cup: A Marketing Masterstroke In 1996, Coca-Cola invested $10 million to become the official sponsor of the Cricket World Cup, aiming to cement its brand among cricket fans worldwide. They started to broadcast their ads on all the possible channels including print and TV. Pepsi was also in the run to become the official drink of Cricket World Cup but they could not get it. In response to this, with a $5 million budget, they launched the iconic "Nothing Official About It" campaign and made every popular cricketer including Sachin Tendulkar, Shane Warne etc. to say this punch line. This clever slogan resonated deeply with fans, subtly poking fun at Coca-Cola’s official status and capturing hearts with its playful spirit. TIME SHIFT Football fans love watching the game at sports bars. What happens when matches happen in the early morning when those bars are shut? Heineken has launched a campaign to turn select 24-hour laundromats into late-night / early morning sports-viewing locations where UEFA Champions League fans can watch the football matches. Consumers can scan a time-sensitive QR-code on washing machines at local locations of WashEnjoy, one of South Korea’s largest laundromat franchises. The code will give them access to a live stream of the quarter and semi-final soccer matches on SPOTV, the only UEFA Champions League broadcaster in the region. The idea for “LaundroMatch” is in keeping with Heineken’s UEFA Champions League campaign, “Cheers to the Real Hardcore Fans,” which depicts the lengths to which many of the sport’s fans will go to show their devotion, like naming their pets after their favorite players. The campaign is meant to redefine what it means to be a hardcore fan in a bid to make football more inclusive. Great sporting events beget great partnerships and advertisements. And EURO 2024 is no different. This Budweiser spot isn't particularly dynamic or innovative (referencing a multi-decade championship drought) but in leveraging England's "last living legend" from its 1966 championship team, cleverly branding their product with an unactionable call to action, and putting together a moody, optimistically spirited commercial, the spot works.
