In today's world, sustainability has become a crucial aspect that every individual and business must prioritise. It is our collective responsibility to take action towards creating a healthier planet by adopting sustainable practices, such as reducing plastic consumption, conserving energy, and supporting eco-friendly products.
Packaging plays a vital role in modern society by reducing food waste, protecting products during transportation, and ensuring their safety and security. However, most packaging is still made from virgin materials and finite resources, despite the increasing use of recycled content.
Unfortunately, a significant amount of recyclable packaging still ends up in landfills, which can have adverse environmental impacts. According to a recent report, in Australia in 2020-21, 6.74 million tonnes of packaging were placed on the market, out of which 86% had good recyclability. However, only 65% of recyclable packaging was collected and reprocessed, while 44% ended up in landfills.
If all landfilled packaging had been recycled during this period, we could have reduced national greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 2.2 million tonnes, which is equivalent to removing 740,000 cars from the road annually.
To minimise these impacts, we must start designing all packaging to be recovered, reused, recycled, and reprocessed safely. By transforming Australia's packaging, we can minimise environmental harm by designing packaging sustainably, collecting it efficiently, and recycling it into valuable materials and new products.
