When on the hunt for top talent, how often do you look inside your organization?   At GoTo Foods, our mission is to feed people and potential—and promoting from within is one of the strongest ways we’re living out the second half of that statement.   Effective leaders know the importance of having the “right people on the bus” and helping associates (especially those who have a strong cultural fit) find the right “seat” within the organization.   Part of finding the right seat—that role that perfectly aligns with someone’s skillsets, experience and expertise—is having the opportunity to try out different roles along the way.   Take, for example, two recent additions to our Executive Leadership Team: Lindsay Haynes, APR, VP of Strategic Brand Communications, and Marissa Sharpless, VP of Brand Marketing for Carvel.   Lindsay and Marissa both started at GoTo Foods on the exact same day in January 2017, both talented additions to our company’s PR team.   In their seven years here, each of these leaders has served in a total of seven (!) positions.   While most of these promotions were well-earned advances up the proverbial ladder, Marissa and Lindsay each also demonstrated a willingness to make the occasional lateral move in service to the company’s greatest area of need at the time.   That kind of long-term investment in GoTo Foods’ growth and success reflects a level of loyalty, adaptability and collaboration I am honored to serve alongside. Every one of our clients has experienced, at some point, the bittersweetness of seeing a valued team member move on to new things, replaced by someone new. When key staff changeovers happen, effective communications makes the transition easier for the team, your clients and constituents, and for you.  First, a new face is exciting! Be sure to celebrate them; point out the skills and experiences they bring to the job. Second, take the opportunity to explain the role they’re stepping into. For our city clients especially, a new team member is a chance to educate the public on the important responsibilities shouldered by the person, and your organization. Third, be forward looking; express excitement about the opportunities they open up. Show confidence in them, and your mission. Do it all, and what could have been a period of uncertainty and disruption can actually reinforce your mission, values, and vision.  What other unexpected challenge can you make into an opportunity?
