Out now: “Opto-electronic feedback control of membrane potential for real-time control of action potentials” by Balázs Ördög who initiated this challenging project and relied on perseverance/inventiveness to cross the finish line, with key expert support from Tim De Coster. In this study we developed an opto-electronic feedback loop-based system integrating cellular electrophysiology, real-time computing, and optogenetic approaches. We applied this system to realize accurate restoration and preservation of cardiac action potential waveforms in the presence of electrical perturbations of different origin in an unsupervised, self-regulatory manner, without any prior knowledge of the disturbance. Collectively, these results set the stage for in-depth investigation into the regulatory role of membrane potential in health and disease. One of the studies currently underway at the Center by principal investigator Dr. Svetlana Pundik, MD, MSc, is assessing how spinal cord stimulation for the treatment of chronic pain in Veterans impacts brain structure and function. The research team is using a non-invasive neuroimaging technique called resting state Near Infrared Spectroscopy and Electroencephalography (rs-fNIRS/EEG) to better understand brain changes related to pain relief from spinal cord stimulation. These and future study results might help clinicians refine patient selection for spinal cord stimulation for improved patient outcomes.
