Veterans are well-suited to work in many civilian job settings. But, I believe they excel environments with structure, teamwork and the opportunity to influence/lead others. So it’s approaching 3 years 😮 since I hung my uniform up, and in this time I’ve learned several things that I just was not able to realise while I was serving. Some of what I learned were “I told you so” moments from fellow Marines who left years before me but many other lessons were revelations that could only occur once I stepped into the “real world”. One thing, was to find something that feels as purposeful as serving in the Marines by comparing everything to the military is the ticket to nowhere. I’ve also come to realise that my experiences in the military should not be compared to or used as a guide for my future personal and professional career. There’s a reason the Royal Marines is a mystery to those who don’t serve and there’s also a really good reason we’d like to keep our private sector operating at a distance from what the military takes care of on a daily basis. So, in a nutshell, when you are planning your departure from the military, take time to realise things will be different and to not compare everything in the future to what you experienced in uniform. #military #veterans #leadership #future #successs

As part of #ArmedForces week, today marks specific recognition of those in our Reserve Armed Forces. You might even spot some wearing their military uniform to their civilian work today, where safe and practicable. Reservists are commonly cited as "twice the citizen" as they choose to support the Armed Forces in their spare time, typically during the evenings and weekends, but occasionally full-time when the country needs additional support. I was an Army Reservist for 13 years. I had a huge amount of opportunities presented to me which helped my professional development, which, in turn, my employers were able to benefit from. Whether that was transferring ideas/best practice/working models to/from the military and civilian worlds, or in the training & experience I gained in leadership and operational roles. Do you know any Reservists? How does your company support and enable them?

I think this is an important paper that anyone who cares about our military and our nation should read. Some of my thoughts: 1. I completely agree with the Culture Shift of Mission Command and "disciplined disobedience." Easy to say - tough to do but we have to embrace it. 2. Agree on all points of technology and the need to operate routinely dispersed, disconnected, and in multi-domain including commercial. 3. The idea of a move towards partial conscription is interesting but I think unworkable. It is not the American Way of War to have a large standing Army and even when we had conscription it was short. Even FDR on the eve of Pearl Harbor would not have been able to get support for the draft and today there is no support. So what do we do? I would have liked to see an embracing of Coalition/Allies. America's super power is that we have friends and our threat does not.
