💡 According to the EPA, Ireland generates approximately 1.1m tonnes of food waste per year. By 2030, Compass Ireland will reduce its food waste by 50%. Here's how we're doing it 👀👇 ◽ We have implemented a digital food waste tracker - DigiTally - across our business. The system helps to build our teams' awareness of precisely how much food waste they are generating, identify trends and patterns, and guides them on how to optimise their menu planning, food ordering, food storage and food preparation processes. ◽ Our Food Liberation concept features stem-to-tip recipes, making sure absolutely every edible inch of our ingredients are put to good use. ◽ In the instances where surplus food is unpreventable, we’ve partnered with food redistribution pioneers, Olio. Food security and food waste are issues that impact us all. Sodexo Sustainability and Decarbonisation Manager, Hayley Borissow, recently had the privilege of joining a panel discussion with our partners Foodbank Australia and End Food Waste Australia to lift the lid on the current state of play of food waste in Australia. Each year Australians waste around 7.6 million tonnes of food across the food supply chain. This equals about 312kg per person. And yet 3.6 million Australians (15%) have experienced food insecurity at least once in the last 12 months. As a corporate, we know there is a lot the Australian food and beverage industry can do to change the tide on this critical topic. We are committed to accelerating food waste reduction through collaboration, technology, and sustainable practices. No one can afford to waste food. Hospitality businesses across the EU have long been committed to reducing food waste. Eurostat data has shown that while households generated 53% of the total EU food waste in 2021, food services only accounted for 9%, a reduction from the 12% reported in 2016 Fusion estimates. Ahead of the vote in the European Parliament’s ENVI Committee on 14 February, we call on EU legislators working on food waste reduction targets to provide hospitality with tailored and practical measures for micro-enterprises and #SMEs. That means 👇 🔸 Support the industry's management system, staff engagement and training initiatives to reduce food losses and food waste. 🔹 Encourage national voluntary agreements for food distribution and food donation from our business. 🔸 Realize quality data and clear measurements to prevent food waste in the hospitality sector. 🔹 Support #EUHospitality to encourage customers to adopt best practices. #FoodwasteEU

I am excited to share that I have recently obtained a Food Waste Prevention certification from the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR)! Throughout the course, they emphasized three important takeaway messages that I believe are crucial to share with everyone. Firstly, monitoring and measuring food waste at all levels of the food chain is essential. As the saying goes, "you can't manage what you can't measure!" Everyone- from governments to retailers, restaurants, and households- should make an effort to measure food waste. Secondly, the stages of the food chain are all connected. The actions of stakeholders at one stage can affect the food waste generated at other stages. For instance, the way manufacturers package food can lead to overstocking and wastage at the household level. Lastly, the role of the public sector is vital. Governments, regional and local authorities create an enabling environment where stakeholders take action and collaborate to minimize food waste. Long-term planning, targets, and indicators should underpin this process. Together, we can make a difference in reducing food waste.
