#Grasslands cover 70% of the world’s agricultural land. They are one of the most effective #carbon sinks, actually more effective than trees because grass biomass is mostly underground (10x more than above, contributing to long-term soil carbon #sequestration). The establishment of a global Rangelands Stewardship Council and rangelands standard holds great promise for better maintenance of rangelands which -if well maintained- can be relied upon to absorb unexpectedly large amounts of carbon in the coming decades. #rangelandmanagement #livestock

Sheep are grazed at some solar facilities in the United States and Europe. Unlike goats, sheep do not climb on or harm the panels. According to data gathered by NREL’s InSPIRE project, as of December 2022, 794 megawatts of power generated by solar panels in the United States incorporate sheep grazing. Raising the height of PV panels is not necessary to accommodate sheep grazing, because vegetation is accessible to sheep beneath the panels at standard heights. Sheep grazing can benefit solar operators by reducing mowing, herbicide, and other vegetation management needs at the site. Local shepherds also benefit as they can be paid to provide sheep and to manage the grazing. Cattle grazing is being conducted at a few PV facilities, but cattle can pose a risk to the equipment, and additional fencing or higher panels may be required to permit co-location. These measures may raise the cost of the solar installation. Research to facilitate cattle grazing under solar arrays is ongoing. #agricultureandfarming #agriculture #solarfarm #solarpanels

Grazing doesn’t affect sage grouse nest success, say #uidaho researchers after completing 10-year study. The research led by U of I Professor Courtney Conway shows that cows sharing nesting habitat with grouse on federal lands has no influence on nest success of greater sage grouse if grazing intensity is kept at current levels. In fact, according to the research, there are upshots for grouse living alongside cows. Having bovines on the land results in a greater abundance of insects, especially in the spring, when chicks rely on bugs for food. "Nesting success doesn’t seem to be affected by current levels of cattle grazing, and insect biomass increases with grazing,” said Conway, who directs the USGS research unit and led the decade-long research project which wrapped up in August 2023. The idea for an extensive grouse and cattle grazing research project was spurred after opposition to spring cattle grazing on federal land picked up steam. Conway knew there was a dearth of science to inform the debate. He joined forces with Prof. Karen Launchbaugh, the director of the Rangeland Center, biologists in the Bureau of Land Management — the agency that oversees much of the sage grouse habitat in southern Idaho — Idaho Fish and Game, and Idaho ranchers to bring scientific data to the debate. Texas A&M Forest Service is awarding $8.25 million through the Texas Climate-Smart Initiative, a financial incentives program to fund non-industrial, private, small-acreage landowners. The five-year project will provide financial incentives to agricultural commodities across Texas. The Texas Climate-Smart Initiative program incentivizes farming practices that reduce greenhouse gas emissions or sequester carbon beyond normal practices. For forestry, the program aims to maximize carbon sequestration while simultaneously producing high-quality fiber for the timber industry. Landowners interested in conducting science-based, carbon-focused forest management practices may apply for funds for one of five forestry practice categories, including stand establishment, forest fertilization, herbicide application, prescribed burning and forest thinning.
