A dozen companies are taking part in Enabling Massive Integration of PV into Buildings and Infrastructure, a four-year initiative, dubbed MASS-IPV. The project was kicked off in November to improve the penetration of BIPV in the global solar market. The researchers said that despite many years of development, BIPV is still a solar market niche, contributing only 7 GW to the overall cumulative installed PV capacity of 209 GW in Europe in 2022. The project involves several work items, including installing BIPV systems at industrial, residential, offices, historical buildings, and a vertical sound barrier at four locations across Europe. The companies involved include French building information modeling (BIM) software company Enerbim, Cyprus-based engineering company Stratagem Energy and Over Easy Solar, a Norwegian vertical PV for rooftop specialist. In addition, four Spanish companies are participating, namely Izpitek Solar, the aluminum manufacturer Acucoil, industrial design company Branka Solutions and BIPV solution developer Sunthalpy Engineering.

The LSU Institute for Innovation has just posted “Exploring the Tools and Methods for Community-Engaged Solar Design and Development” by Dr. Arup Bhattacharya, Assistant professor, Department of Construction Management at Louisiana State University. This paper was supported by funding from the LSU Institute for Energy Innovation and is a study of existing reports, publications, and conference proceedings to assess the current state of knowledge relating to three crucial aspects of solar deployment: numerical simulation tools to study the resiliency of ground-mounted solar structures against extreme weather-related wind and water forces, the importance of community engagement for urban design framework development and implementation, and integration of renewable energy in the existing grid for optimal operation. The paper is a product of the LSU Institute for Energy Innovation’s “Utilizing the Sun for a Sustainable Future in Louisiana – a Pilot Solar Deployment Project at LSU” on which Dr. Bhattacharya is the principal investigator. We will post more work products from this project as they become available. #SolarPower #ExtremeWeather #StormResiliency #LSU #EnergyResearch #EnergyInnovation https://lnkd.in/gd5-X6yb

GESS can redefine urban energy by turning skyscrapers into vertical batteries. Beyond energy storage, these systems might stabilize buildings during earthquakes by acting as dynamic counterweights. Did you know ancient Egyptians used similar principles in pyramid construction to distribute weight? This modern twist on an old idea could also lower real estate costs by reducing the need for expansive power plants. How might city planning evolve to incorporate these dual-function structures effectively? #UrbanInnovation #AncientTech #SustainableFuture

Gravity-based energy storage systems (GESS) could turn skyscrapers into renewable energy sources. Energy Vault and Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) are exploring integrating GESS into buildings. GESS lifts heavy blocks with surplus energy, converting it to electricity when lowered. Unlike pumped hydro storage, GESS can be built anywhere, expanding clean energy options. The “EVu” solution integrates GESS into buildings 300 to 1,000 meters tall, generating power for towers and nearby areas. How could this innovation impact urban energy infrastructure? hashtag #construction #architecture #engineering #energy source - The B1M
