Check out my latest podcast with the Global Healthy Living Foundation. Thanks to my longtime health care policy and advocacy colleagues Robert Popovian and Seth D. Ginsberg for allowing me to do this! We have so much opportunity to improve our health care system on many levels. We all know that. I am very focused on #sustainablemedicine. What does that mean? Health care that is efficient and can sustain itself. Health care delivery that ensures the patient is first and we avoid wasting resources, materials, time, energy and confusion to ensure optimal and sustainable medical care. Health care is so siloed. While my health care team is incredible, as my medical conditions became more complex before my kidney transplant (one year ago in two days) so many more people were involved and I was left thinking- who is on first for me? Who makes the right decisions for me or advises my husband and family when I cannot? I was reminded of this again when my dad had a heart attack one week ago. Thankfully he did amazing and is home and back cooking and doing his normal activities (amazing!) But, he waited almost two days for a cardiac cath. Two days waiting is horrible when you don't know your diagnosis, but so is the wasted time, medical care, efficiency, and other unnecessary costs that could have been avoided.. had there been enough staff and connectivity to get his treatment done within at least a few hours after he was admitted with a heart attack happening during admission! The patient should be our purpose- for ANYONE in medicine. And our health care system- from the care provided, to the associations that drive patient outcomes, need to be sustainable. Smart planning. As Senior Director for Health Equity at the powerhouse national nonprofit Families USA, Staci collaborates with health industry partners, community leaders and health care experts and advocates to advance and win policies that bring resources and justice to underinvested Black, Brown and indigenous communities. On this episode of Power Station Podcast, Staci talks about the threat we all face to losing some of our nation's most impactful policy advancements, including the Affordable Care Act, which Families USA played a significant role in getting over the finish line. As she explains, health equity starts at home, with the state of our housing, the air we breathe, the open space, grocery stores and health care we are, or do not have, access to. Data shows, and communities know, that achieving health equity requires foundational investments in the well-being of all people and communities. It's Day 2 of National Public Health Week! #NPHW Today's focus is on healthy neighborhoods. I see this in my work A LOT. When our team conducts #needsassessments we often hear and see how the environments in which people live can create significant health inequities. This is because not everyone has the same access to: 🚰 Air and water free of pollution. 🏡 Safe places to live, without hazards like lead or smoke. 🚵♀️ Safe ways for everyone to be active, like sidewalks and safe places to bike. 🥗 Easy access to fresh, affordable, nutritious, and culturally appropriate food. These are all critical to our health. When our environments and our neighborhoods are healthy, we have the building blocks for healthy lives. And when our environments and our neighborhoods are not healthy, it can be hugely challenging for individuals to overcome these obstacles to health by themselves. That's why #publichealth works every day to improve the environment on a SYSTEMS level, for EVERYONE. Whether it be advocating for smoke-free policies or bike lanes or healthier public school lunches, public health is all about making healthier environments and neighborhoods that benefit us all. But there are things we can each do to play our part in this collective goal! We can do things like plant trees to increase green space, get to know our neighbors for social cohesion, and support farmers' markets for fresh, local food.
