I've witnessed a common tendency among small business owners to become so fixated on turning a quick profit that they lose sight of the bigger picture. In the process, they make hasty and impulsive decisions that can take a toll on their business. This obsession for chasing immediate gains can prevent business owners from recognizing fantastic opportunities and, at times, even drive away talented individuals (partners or employees) who could contribute to their business' success. I believe that the difference between great leaders and the rest often lies in their willingness to invest in the long-term, even if it means sacrificing short-term gains. Great leadership is grounded in data analysis and the ability to construct a strategy based on that information - no gut feeling decisions! And patience is key as they allow those strategies to bear fruit. Several of my friends who are leaders in their respective organizations or companies told me that during a pandemic like now, business is changing rapidly. This change is caused by many factors, such as changes in customer behaviour, work restrictions in various places, and increasingly large business problems, causing our leadership to be seriously tested from various sides. We as leaders can no longer give instructions but must be willing to step down and then look for inspiration about what is and will happen. How could it not be? Right now, we are facing a world that is truly full of uncertainty. We are still determining what business will be like in the future and we also need to know what kind of business balance will be formed in the future These various uncertainties, which are often called VUCA, will, if not dealt with immediately, be detrimental to us and the business we are managing. What if we are viewing the game of business all wrong? I’m currently reading the brilliant latest book by Simon Sinek, The Infinite Game where he makes a very powerful reframe for leaders to consider. If business is an infinite game, not won or lost in the short term but, designed to keep players in the game for as long as possible - wouldn’t we play differently? Sinek makes the case that business is an infinite rather than finite game because the rules of engagement and success metrics vary from business to business. But the problem is, we are wired with finite thinking from a very early age. “As human beings, we are naturally inclined to seek out immediate solutions to uncomfortable problems and prioritise wins to advance our ambitions.” However . . . “Great leaders are the ones who think beyond the short term . . . they are the ones who know it it is not about the next quarter . . . it is about the next generation.” If success is defined by the ability to keep playing - rather than short-term wins that by default mean that someone else loses - imagine the impact this would have for industries, communities and society in general. Instead of viewing competitors as businesses to win against, Sinek recommends seeking worthy rivals to compete with to improve your business. I like this distinction. It acknowledges that healthy competition is good for business. It keeps leaders honest and it can move industries forward responsibly. This shift in thinking will also help us to make the sustainable transition more easily and at speed.
