To be sure, it is in the law firm’s best interest to facilitate a healthy work-life balance. Indeed, the data has long demonstrated that employees are more productive, have less absenteeism, and quit less frequently when the leadership of the firm promotes a workplace culture that reflects a genuine interest in the well-being of their employees. However, rather than frame the question as suggested in this article, to wit: “This International Women’s Day, I want to also focus on a question that is often on women’s minds: “Can I be a mother and build a successful career in law?”’ Should not the question be, “Can I be a SUCCESSFUL PARENT and still build a successful career in the law? There is no greater human responsibility than that of a parent who is responsible for the proper nurturance of a totally dependent child. Women should not have the exclusive or even primary responsibility for child rearing. To frame the question as suggested or implied by this article that women should be or are more concerned than men about fulfilling their parental responsibilities while pursuing a “successful” legal career is misplaced. Fathers and mothers who are also lawyers should be equally concerned about this work-life balance.
