On of the five areas of the social determinants of health is access to quality education, from as young as preschool to postsecondary education. When people have access to quality education and have opportunity to access higher education, they are less apt to have chronic illnesses and medical conditions (e.g. diabetes, heart disease, MIs, strokes) because they have access to jobs with increased compensation and excellent benefits (health insurance, PTO). Unfortuately, if you are from a lower SES or even with a disability you are less likely to have these opportunities. My doctoral project was rooted in this topic specifically focusing on students with disabilities. Yesterday, the New York State Education Department presented a new vision for State Graduation Requirements. This November, the Department is expected to present its related state department implementation plan. Other states looking to similarly move toward modernizing graduation requirements and measures can access two reports that helped inform years of rigorous analysis and deliberation underlying NYSED's efforts. The reports, curated by the Region 2 Comprehensive Center at NYSED's request, reflect what is known about how other states approach graduation measures and requirements, including performance based assessments. Recently, Lincoln University alumni were provided a letter from the LU National Alumni Association that gave misleading information. Click the link for insight into the University’s tuition, room, and board charges for the 2024-25 school year. Rising costs of doing business has caused the University to adjust its charges for tuition, as well as room and board. From a board (housing) rate perspective, Lincoln University has the lowest room rate among public institutions in Missouri for a double occupancy room. Of Missouri's 13 public universities, other schools increased their tuition between 3.5% and 5% for the 2024-25 school year. Lincoln's 4% increase is in the middle of the range. In today’s “The Morning” from the The New York Times, David Leonhardt (Yale '94) writes approvingly of Yale University and other elite universities following Dartmouth College’s return to the SAT requirement. Leonhardt, quoting Georgetown University’s Richard Kahlenberg (Harvard '85), implies this is a race-blind way of achieving “diversity without the use of racial preferences” because “standardized test scores predict academic performance better than high school grades.”   This would only be true if graduating seniors are required/expected to take the SAT (as they are in CT, RI, etc).   It might surprise you to learn that, in 2019, the average SAT score (1237) from Mississippi bested New Jersey’s average of 1090 by a significant margin (P < 0.001).   But, that’s because only a 7% self-selecting set of Mississippi’s graduating class took the SAT compared to 82% of New Jersey’s.   It doesn’t take a genius to understand that the 7% who chose to take the SAT does not constitute an unbiased racial or socioeconomic cross section of the state of Mississippi. What Thomas Jefferson High School got right by taking the top 1.5% of each middle school, was that 100% of public middle school students in Alexandria VA must be given a grade by their school. The mission of these institutions as set forth in the 1862 act is to focus on the teaching of practical agriculture, science, military science, and engineering—although "without excluding other scientific and classical studies"—as a response to the industrial revolution and changing social class.This mission was in contrast to the historic practice of higher education concentrating on a liberal arts curriculum. A 1994 expansion gave land-grant status to several tribal colleges and universities.

7️⃣ YEARS OF FROZEN TUITION!! Commonwealth University students at the Bloomsburg, Lock Haven, Mansfield, and Clearfield campuses will not experience an increase in their tuition for the upcoming 2024-25 academic year. The State System Board of Governors voted unanimously to freeze tuition, keeping Commonwealth University one of the most affordable public higher education options in the state. This is the seventh consecutive year the tuition rate will remain the same. The repeated freezes save students nearly 25% in tuition costs compared to the price if tuition had risen at the inflation rate for the last six years. Today, the California Assembly Concurrent Resolution 147 (ACR 147) will be heard at the California Senate Education Committee. This resolution, introduced by Assemblymember David Alvarez, establishes California’s First-Generation College Celebration Day. MANA de San Diego is proud to be a sponsor of this resolution.
