SEPHORA Recently I hosted a virtual moment to pause with my colleagues and have some virtual fun together. Celebrating wins, big or small is so impactful. Each victory, no matter its size, is a testament to our hard work, resilience, and commitment. It's not just about reaching the finish line, but also appreciating the journey that got us there. 2023 was a year that shed light on new opportunities, changes and obstacles for our team. Celebrations foster a sense of accomplishment and boost morale, but they also play a crucial role in strengthening our collaborative relationships. They remind us that our successes are not achieved in isolation, but through the collective effort of a dedicated team. Having fun together isn't just an added bonus, it's a key driver in achieving our goals. Shared laughter and joy create a bond that fosters a sense of unity that is truly invaluable. Here you can see my teams findings after I told them to race and find something blue in our "Find Something" game. Don't mind my face, I was focused on capturing the moment haha. We spent time diving further into our Gallup strengths and how they show up in the way we work. We had some fun in sharing some favourite personal stories and ended with some friendly competition. My love for SEPHORA as a brand is no secret. I’ve always admired their loyalty program and how beautifully they stay true to their vision and mission in everything they do. Recently, Anuja K from Vajro shared a photo of a Sephora store that she took from The Dubai Mall. This inspired me to dive deeper into their strategies and brand values. Over the last two days, I’ve been assessing all of Sephora’s prominent channels and customer touchpoints, curating them into a swipe file. It’s almost ready, I’ll share the link to the files in a series of posts. Sephora shows us that brand loyalty doesn’t emerge from just a loyalty program. It’s a culmination of every single interaction and experience the customer has with your brand. The more I dig into their strategies, the more I believe that Sephora is a living demonstration of this quote: When women support each other, incredible things happen. Check it out in the comments. 🔗 Here's my take 💭 💖 Rhode excels in branding and building love among fans. They've stood out in a sea of celeb-founded brands that flopped. Founder Hailey Bieber has landed among the ranks of Selena Gomez and Marianna Hewitt, in how they leverage their reputations and communities to drive success. 🧩 In simple terms: Brands often enter Sephora to boosts awareness and global reach vs. Ulta to focus on accessibility, sales, and market penetration. Sephora's focus is prestige brands, while Ulta offers a wider breadth, covering mass to masstige to prestige. 💄 Rhode's high-end masstige pricing could lean towards Ulta, but with similar cult-favorite brands' successes at Sephora (Rare Beauty, Fenty Beauty by Rihanna, Summer Fridays), I'd say signs point toward Sephora. 👏 Success at *either* retailer, though, requires strong infrastructure to support the logistical beast that is wholesale, choosing a retailer that will support them (e.g., end-caps, marketing opportunities), and not losing focus on nurturing their existing community. To mark my 16th year (cue astonished gasps) at Sephora this week, I wanted to share 16 things...I’m kidding. I don’t have 16 important things to share about any topic, and if I did I’d just write a book. So how about SIX lessons I’ve learned on my storied rise (cue eyerolls) from executive assistant to marketing leader. 1️⃣ “Leading by example” is being passionate and trustworthy at work, but it is also taking your PTO, remembering your team members’ birthdays, and not sending emails that require responses at 11pm. 2️⃣ Fight for what you believe in, for what is important to you. This, more than almost anything, will show people who you are. But if *everything* is important to you, you should reprioritize. 3️⃣ “Soft skills” is a bs term Corporate America made up to undermine competencies that may come easier for women. Be a good listener. Exercise empathy. No one is asking you to suddenly become a hugger (I am NOT a hugger), but we all have a heart. Use yours. 4️⃣ Everything is NOT an emergency. 5️⃣ Do the work. But also tell people you did the work. If you didn’t do the work alone, tell people that too. 6️⃣ There are no dumb questions, but there are *not smart* moments to ask them. Know the difference. 🔺 #BrickAndMortarFails 🔺 This week, I experienced firsthand the struggle of brick-and-mortar stores in today's market. With news of yet another huge brand filing for bankruptcy, it's no longer surprising 🚨 📍My friend and I entered the renowned makeup store Douglas, hoping to enhance our beauty with high-end products. Our experience, however, was far from satisfactory🚫 We waited for assistance for 20 long minutes, as almost no one was on the floor. When help finally arrived, my experience was smooth due to my fair and easy skin. But my friend? Not so much. She had to try multiple brands, remove and apply makeup by herself, and deal with assistants who didn't quite understand her needs 🚩 It was shocking to see the assistant pushing shades that were clearly not suitable for her complexion and skin type🚩 It wasn't until we returned to the first assistant, who had helped me, that we found success. 🔺She patiently tried 6 different shades on my friend, offered a great consultation, and finally, we found the perfect makeup. 🔺This experience only reinforced my belief: if brick-and-mortar stores want to survive, they must prioritize excellent customer service and understand the diversity among consumers‼️ 🔺It's not just about selling products, it's about understanding individual needs and providing a tailored service.
