Today, we launched our Community-Led Mangrove Hypocotyls Plantation Drive along a 3 km stretch near the Devi River Mouth in Odisha. This initiative is crucial for restoring vital mangrove ecosystems and connecting the mangrove - user community, which provide critical habitat for wildlife, protect coastlines, and support local communities. The initiative benefits greatly from the dedicated stewardship of local fisherwomen and fishermen. We are also grateful for the support from U.S. Department of State US Consulate General Hyderabad and FIDR Bhubaneswar, which makes this ambitious goal of planting 5,000 hypocotyls possible. A first-of-its-kind initiative in India - Coastal Dune Vegetation Restoration to Combat Beach Erosion in Odisha, led by the Legendary Barefoot Marine Conservationist, Bichi Bhai. Coastal dune vegetation plays a critical role in reducing beach erosion by stabilizing sand dunes, serving as a natural barrier against powerful ocean waves, and helping to protect inland areas from storm surges. These plants' deep roots bind the sand, preventing it from being washed away, thereby preserving our coastlines. Bichi Bhai, a revered figure in grassroots marine conservation in India, has dedicated his life to the protection of the Olive Ridley sea turtle. Since 1994, he lives in a beachside cottage, tirelessly working to conserve these endangered species. Despite becoming physically handicapped in 2019, he continues his vital conservation efforts with unwavering commitment. Utilizing his indigenous knowledge, Bichi Bhai has initiated the establishment of coastal dune vegetation nurseries at the Devi River Mouth. This week’s Mangrove Cleanup at Devi River Mouth. The weekly efforts, led by Shri Rahul Moharana, have been applauded by Hon. Narendra Modi ji in Maan Ki Baat. For over 32 weeks, the Odisha Mangrove Clean-up team has removed more than 7,635 kilos of waste, significantly improving the health of these crucial coastal areas. Mangroves play a critical role in protecting shorelines from erosion, supporting diverse wildlife, and sequestering carbon. Our clean-up drives are essential in maintaining the balance of these ecosystems and ensuring a safer habitat for numerous species. #Mangroves are vital ecosystems that act as natural buffers against coastal erosion, provide habitat for diverse wildlife, and play a crucial role in carbon sequestration. However, they are increasingly threatened by pollution, particularly from plastics. Today, we took another step towards protecting these critical ecosystems by removing toxic waste like Styrofoam, bottles, pouches, discarded nets, and various other plastic materials from a potential mangrove area at the Devi River Mouth in Odisha. This effort, led by the Odisha Mangrove Cleanup Team, was recognized by Hon. Narendra Modi ji in Mann ki Baat. It's encouraging to see the younger generation actively involved in these initiatives, committed to safeguarding our planet and its rich biodiversity from anthropogenic pressures. It's an honor to spearhead this weekly initiative alongside dedicated individuals like Rahul Moharana (24), who works as a security guard in a private agency. After focusing on cleanup and awareness efforts in nearby villages, our mission has now expanded to maintaining a plastic-free environment in this dense, potential mangrove ecosystem. This area is home to species like the fishing cat and serves as a vital buffer between the Devi River Mouth and the ocean.
