Confused about how a psychiatric nurse practitioner differs from a psychiatrist? Both psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse practitioners are qualified to provide mental health care. Psychiatrists have medical training and are licensed physicians, whereas psychiatric nurse practitioners are advanced practice nurses with specialized training in psychiatric-mental health care. Their roles may overlap in terms of assessment, diagnosis, and treatment. Psychiatric nurse practitioners, like a psychiatrist, have a scope of practice that includes assessing patients, diagnosing mental health disorders, and prescribing medications. They also emphasize holistic care, incorporating patient education, preventive measures, and collaboration with other healthcare professionals into their practice. Fun fact!: Psychiatric nurse practitioners have advanced training in clinical settings, often holding a Master's or Doctorate degree in nursing. Contact Lori today.
