In order to limit global warming to 1.5°C, we need to reduce global emissions by around 7% annually until 2030 – but they continue to increase by 1.5% today. New report by Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and World Economic Forum calls for systemic actions from companies and governments. It outlines the urgency and necessity of drastic action to combat climate change effectively and deliver on commitments. It emphasizes the need for governments to level the playing field for green solutions and proposes practical ways for companies to achieve outsized impact in their ecosystems. In the report, our collaboration with Arla Foods Ingredients on precision fermentation is mentioned as an example of companies co-investing and sharing knowledge to strengthen suppliers’ decarbonization efforts The guide urges leaders to pursue systemic actions, including decarbonizing supply chains, disrupting markets with green alternatives and encouraging industry-wide collaborations. What I’m reading this weekend: Drawdown by Paul Hawken Although published in 2017, I find myself referencing this book to see what has changed in our world since initially written. If you are looking for a book that offers hope and solutions for the climate crisis, I highly recommend Drawdown by Paul Hawken. This book is a comprehensive plan to reverse global warming by outlining the top 100 solutions we can implement today. These solutions range from renewable energy and electric vehicles to educating girls and family planning. Each solution is ranked by its potential impact, cost, and savings, and is backed by rigorous research and data. What I love about this book is that it shows that reversing global warming is not only possible, but also profitable and beneficial for humanity and the planet. It also empowers us to take action in our own lives and communities, and to join the global movement of drawdown. 🌍 MAJOR CLIMATE MILESTONE REACHED 🌍 Ozone-depleting substances have declined faster than expected and peaked five years earlier than predicted, scientists revealed this week. This achievement is largely thanks to the Montreal Protocol, introduced in 1987 to control the use and production of these harmful substances destroying the ozone layer. Next in line are fluorinated gases (F-gases), potent global warming agents used as refrigerants, regulated under the same protocol by the Kigali Amendment enacted in 2016. The EU is leading global action against F-gases thanks to robust regulations adopted in the previous mandate. This positive finding showcases humankind's ability to reduce its impact on the planet through decisive action. We are on a journey to net zero as we commit to work with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) on deliverable, evidence-based pathways to drive down greenhouse gas emissions. Within this framework Dale Farm is required to set environmental targets in line with what the latest climate science deems necessary to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement – limiting global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. Targets we have set to date include reducing the carbon footprint of our milk production by 30% by 2030 and reducing overall greenhouse gas emissions from factories by at least 50% by 2028. Methane gas is natural, but lots of natural things (spinach brownies, asbestos, loud snoring) are very bad, and often dangerous (have you ever slept next to a loud snorer!). Let's talk about how to reframe methane messaging to rewire our conversations.

We've supported two clients with new Science Based Targets initiative commitments over the last week and have another two going through the verification process. It's nearly always something we recommend that clients do, if not formally with verification, at least by aligning their goals to the SBTi recommended reduction pathways. Why? Because it's the MINIMUM we all need to do to stop global warming, and it's EXPECTED by many investors and large companies. We know many companies feel reluctant to commit because they worry about how to reduce their supply chain emissions whilst growing their business, and yes, that is a challenge, but actually, if EVERY company did their bit to eliminate their direct emissions then these supply chain emissions would fall away. The world is not on track to meet the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C, and the situation is getting worse. Without drastic action, we are likely to see more extreme weather events, rising sea levels, and other devastating consequences. This paper by WEC & BCG outlines the current state of climate action and identifies the key areas where progress is needed. It calls for a significant increase in national commitments and policies, as well as more ambitious action from corporations and investors. It also emphasizes the need for a just transition that ensures that no one is left behind. The paper concludes by outlining a set of near-term priorities that can help to accelerate progress. These include: - Unlocking bolder, more rapid national commitments and actions - Leveling up ambition in key sectors, such as energy and transportation - Investing in innovative technologies - Providing targeted support to developing countries The paper emphasises that the time for action is now. We cannot afford to wait any longer to address the climate crisis.
