The road to biodiversity credit mechanisms requires tough conversations... 🗣️ Maybe the toughest is how investors can build bridges with Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities, who manage territories where 80% of the world's biodiversity resides. I spoke to Jessica Smith from United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) on how this could happen, and how nature-based investors should be thinking about it. We discussed how not having free, prior and informed consent may be an investor risk, and what the financial sector more broadly is doing with understanding nature. A new paper released today by the Biodiversity Credit Alliance puts these points in the foreground of the mechanism, even before biodiversity credits are defined. 📰 Check out the full story here: https://lnkd.in/eguAtN_g #naturefinance #biodiversity #biodiversitycredits

#interestingread In the last couple of years, there has been an increase of focus on protecting biodiversity ecosystems - whether through Country commitment's and communication of progress through the UN Convention of Biological Diversity or through emerging policies such as the European Green Deal - but what does this mean from a financial perspective? How does biodiversity impact the economy? The DeNederlandscheBank published a document in 2020 - Exploring biodiversity risks for the Dutch financial sector - that explores a number of areas including the #biodiversity footprint of the financial sector and how #biodiversityloos threatens the availability of ecosystem services. Although this report focuses only on the Dutch market, it's still an interest read to see a perspective on how #biodiversityloss can be linked to a country's economy and it's overall financial health. #biodiversityrisks #financialrisks #morningcoffee #biodiversity

It's #EarthDay! #Biodiversity is essential for preserving the #health and #stability of #ecosystems, fostering a delicate ecological balance that ensures nature's ability to provide essential resources such as food, clean air, water, energy, and raw materials. Beyond these critical functions, biodiversity plays a key role in #climate regulation and fortifying #resilience against environmental changes. Within the European Union, the enduring impact of human activities over centuries has led to a rapid decline in biodiversity. This #report offers a comprehensive overview of curiosity-driven research on biodiversity, supported by the European Research Council (ERC). It sheds light on the connections between this research and EU policies designed to safeguard and restore biodiversity and ecosystems. https://lnkd.in/dzS-ig7z

Director of Sustainability, Center Parcs
6dThanks for organising this webinar. It was great to be able to announce that #Nature has now been made a formal stakeholder in our business, and reported as such yesterday in our group annual report. This puts nature on in the same category as the other stakeholder in our business guests, staff, communities, suppliers and investors. This is more than just words, it reflects the approach that we already take within our business in giving a voice to nature from our villages to our boardroom and the continuous and ongoing approach that we have taken to consultation with nature over the last 37 years, through advocates, expert staff and surveys. These are some of the reasons why we have retained the The Wildlife Trusts #BiodiversityBenchmark for 17 years. https://corporate.centerparcs.co.uk/governance/regulatory-compliance/group-annual-reports-and-accounts.html
