The Georgia Tech Alumni Association came by this afternoon for a tour led by Brian Culler and Kyle Porter!

If you needed a killer “opera cape” in Atlanta 100 years ago, the Samuel Gans Co. was your spot.⁠ ⁠ In the 1910s, Atlanta’s Mitchell Street was a thriving thoroughfare of both hotels and street-level retail shops. ⁠ ⁠ One of those shops was the Samuel Gans Company which billed itself as “the largest retail store in the Terminal District.”⁠ ⁠ Gans sold mostly apparel—men’s trousers & suits, ladies’ broadcloth coats & dresses, and even “opera capes.”⁠ ⁠ Gans operated on Mitchell Street from about 1907 - 1911 before relocating to a larger space.⁠ ⁠ Give the images a swipe to see⁠ ⁠ → What the building looks like now, and⁠ → How the employees of Gans aided a performer known as "the handcuff king."⁠ ⁠ P.S. — Speaking of historic Hotel Row...⁠ ⁠ The retail spaces filling up however a few more spots are still up for grabs.

The Teilhaber family has owned Concordia Hall in South Downtown for decades.⁠ ⁠ Their family business, Friedman’s Shoes, has been the building’s anchor tenant since the 1960s.⁠ ⁠ So why did they decide to part with it now?⁠ ⁠ April Stammel, our head of Marketing & Community Engagement, recently chatted with Bruce Teilhaber and his son Brett and asked them that question.⁠ ⁠ In this quick clip, they talk about shifting footwear trends, recent development in the neighborhood, and navigating all the change.⁠ ⁠ Friedman’s next chapter is an exciting one!
