Evaluation is changing, and the face of evaluation is changing with it. We are proud to contribute to increased diversity in evaluation through our internship program. We invited Zimingonaphakade Sigenu to share how her participation in our internship has influenced her professional development as a young African woman. Here’s what she shared: “As I reflect on my journey as a young development professional, researcher, and emerging evaluator in South Africa, my internship at Southern Hemisphere Consultancy stands out as a pivotal experience, significantly shaping my growth and trajectory. During my time as an Intern from 2021-2022, and even before —when I worked for Southern Hemisphere as a consultant— I gained a wealth of skills and exposure that have proven invaluable in my subsequent roles and endeavors. I was able to support project coordination for two major evaluation projects focusing on sexual and reproductive health rights for adolescent girls and young women across Africa. This helped me hone my project coordination, stakeholder engagement, data collection and analysis, and report writing skills. After the internship, I joined the Human Sciences Research Council as a Researcher, where I applied my newly gained skills to make significant impacts. My internship experience also nurtured my interest in creative dissemination strategies, which I’ve used in projects such as the African Youth Livelihoods Virtual Museum and the "Hustling the African Dream" podcast series. My internship was transformative, deepening my understanding of young women's challenges. Now, more than ever, I’m dedicated to using the skills I gained to amplify young voices, challenge systemic barriers, and contribute to a more just and equitable future for all.” As we reflect on and appreciate Zimingonaphakade’s on-going journey, we're reminded of why we remain committed to empowering young talents like her. However, promoting diversity and inclusion in study abroad can be challenging, as students may face barriers such as cost, academic requirements, discrimination, or lack of support. Here are some possible ways to promote diversity and inclusion in study abroad: - Provide scholarships and financial aid Provide them with resources and guidance on how to cope with culture shock, discrimination, or harassment - Partner with local organizations and communities in the host country to engage with them through service learning, internships, or cultural activities. The future of the South African economy rests on the shoulders of our youth, making it crucial to address and illuminate the unemployment crisis they face. In December 2023, our annual Student Spend Survey, which received responses from over 11 300 Varsity Vibe users, revealed that 𝟳𝟯% 𝗼𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝘅𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺 𝗼𝗳 𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗼𝘆𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮. Furthermore, 𝟲𝟲% 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗼𝘆𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝘆, casting some uncertainty on the value of pursuing a tertiary education. The scarcity of paid internships and the increasing requirement for at least one year of experience for entry-level jobs have exacerbated these challenges. Consequently, 𝟳𝟱% 𝗼𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿𝗻 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘂𝗻𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗼𝘆𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗱. Echoing the sentiments of the late Oliver Tambo, the youth are indeed our future. It is imperative to introduce initiatives that address youth unemployment, ensuring they have the tools and opportunities to succeed in a challenging economic landscape. #YouthMonth

Attention: Federal Government and Civil Society Organizations One of the challenge that hinder young people from engaging in public discourse and projects is funding, over time we have heard of the young people been invincible so we the young people, are calling on the federal government and relevant stakeholders to provide paid internships, jobs and transport stipends to encourage our participation in conferences and seminars. As a young person, I have been using my personal funds to attend these events, but I believe that with support, more young people can be empowered to engage in these opportunities. Increased youth engagement is crucial for our country's development, and we urge stakeholders to consider providing transport stipends to facilitate our participation. This will enable us to: - Attend conferences and seminars without financial burden - Engage with policymakers and influencers - Contribute to national discourse and decision-making - Develop our skills and knowledge We believe that investing in youth engagement will yield long-term benefits for our country.
