Appreciate the Love, Joe Carbone!
Often people ask me how I got into real estate and what I did my years spent in New York. I love these questions. I say the same thing proudly every time:
I started in the executive search.
At 21 (20 if you count my internship), I was thrown into mix. Cold Calling, going on lunches, wearing suits, and joining high level conversations with some of New York Cities TOP financial service and management consulting professionals. And I got to do it from the very BEST in the industry. Joe Carbone & Brett Vecchio.
They taught me business acumen, the art of the deal, negotiations, how to present myself in a professional environment, along with many other industry-transferable skills I'd be lost to this day without.
Now, entering year 4 of my real estate career, I see how imperative these skills were to my future success. I can truthfully say I have zero clue where I would be if it wasn't for Joe Carbone, Brett Vecchio , the city of Manhattan, and the executive search industry. For that, I thank you!
Proud to see where you guys have taken Eastward Partners. You guys deserve it. Keep rockin.
PS: Any young bucks early in your recruiting career, or if you're interested in hopping in, Let me know.... I know a couple guys!
While everyone is automating, we're busy putting the “human” back into "human capital".
Shoutout to Alexander Firstein-Rudder and Mike Forte on Intern Day for being the coolest interns in towns 😎
I am proud of them both as they went on to pursue their passion in law and real estate, respectively AND although the internships were 8 years ago, I keep in regular contact with them both.
I started my career as an intern in Merrill Lynch's private client group in midtown Manhattan some 20 + years ago. The experience shaped part of me that I carry today!

Happy Intern Day! In the course of the past two months, it has been fun and interesting to work with and get to know some of our interns. For many (maybe all?) this is their first fully in-person job experience.
When I contrast our intern program this summer with my son's internship with Coke during the pandemic, it's like night and day. Both positive experiences, but very different.
I know there is still a lot of discussion around #returntooffice and in our business that discussion usually focuses a lot on investment in office buildings.
I wonder the long-term impact on young careers of in-person vs. work from anywhere vs. hybrid internships and early work experience.
Happy #NationalInternAppreciationDay to our Hylant Interns, and all of the other interns doing great work for their respective companies this summer! I've been privileged to see witness firsthand, the amazing accomplishments our interns have made this summer, and how quickly they've learned about the Insurance industry, as well as performed their job functions phenomenally! It's been a wonderful summer and I appreciate every single one of you!!

Great analogy from Michael on thinking about one's career as a brick wall. As you build your skills and add different skills you make the wall stronger. A wall built on a robust foundation can go much higher than a shallow foundation.
Expanding this analogy to the interviews, I will add another great advice that my Engineering classmate and MBA senior Sudeep Chawla once shared with me: "For the interviewer you are an unknown personality, like a brick wall. It is your responsibility to add windows to this brick wall so that they can see how your skillset and experience is relevant to the position.
In case you fail to provide a window, they will be forced to poke around with a hammer to get visibility. And you know where the wall gives away first? Where it is the weakest!"
So, build your career brick by brick into a strong wall, and be mindful of where to build the windows. Help the interviewers gain confidence that your skillset, experience and attitude together will be able get the job done.
PS: Sudeep has since made a big name in world of marketing and brand management. Here are links to his:

Think of your career like a brick wall.
That’s the advice I gave our hundreds of summer interns yesterday – but the meaning isn’t what you might think.
Every skill and every experience is like a brick and you’re adding it to the wall. With each brick, you’re building a stronger foundation.
Great news. Congratulations! 👏
