VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCE: 1.) TSU - I participated in Teens Speak Up with The Epilepsy Foundation to speak to congresspeople about upcoming issues that would effect the population of people with Epilepsy. 2.) AWARENESS - I coordinated an Epilepsy awareness volleyball game at Chapel Hill High School that raised money for The Epilepsy Foundation. We raised over $6000! 3) COACHING - I volunteered as a coach for younger kids learning to play volleyball. I taught the fundamentals to those aspiring to learn the sport I love the most.

Over the weekend I gave my time to help out doing some fundraising for a childrens brain tumour based charity at the Brisbane Pop Culture con event, it is something I do every so often and usually there is a charity that we help out that is picked and vetted by the 501st Stormtroopers (Star Wars charity fundraising group). We raised over 1k which is not a lot but it's still talking to a lot of people for gold coin donations (link is below if you want to donate) but I thought it might be interesting to know what a post pandemic landscape impact on charity donations that previously were based on just your loose change. #1 - this was not a chugger (charity mugger) type arrangement with the funds raised just going to the charity. So it is different to the "professional" charity people you see in the city. Those are a bit sketchy to me and could be considered a negative across the board but they existed before the pandemic so that should not be a factor #2 Post pandemic people carry less money, so the idea of a gold coin donation is probably 50-70% of the time not carrying cash. Not as a reason not to give (because there was another option) but flat out carrying some coins because you had change from something is not that common anymore. Couple this with businesses aiming to go the legally questionable path of not accepting cash, people just dont have change. #3A We had an online donation option available, these are ok. And by large what we did not was the people who wanted to donate and could only do it via the QR code would often donate more than they might have done otherwise. The process however for donating via a phone is clunky and slow and frustrating for a lot of people. #3B Previously we did get given a tap and go machine by a charity to raise and that worked great for most people with the predefined amount. Using the tap and go was almost automatic response for some people who did not give a second thought to it. Why don't all charities have tap and go machines? Fees mostly, donations might be a tax free thing but the transaction fees are still taken just the same. The second reason being while there are dedicated tap and go donation machines the groups who operate them only deal with registered charities directly for devices that are a luxury (for the smaller charities). #4 Cost of living of course is a factor, at the event that we were at there is an entrance fee already. The attractions and booths we had were not something that returned any fees for installing and having them there to be attractions for punters so for the most part it was done for a loss including donated time. But after paying the increasing costs and not having the convenience of a pocket full of coins weighing you down, the extra hassle to donate does feel like a lot. Studies show that a future high school, college or NFL player who starts tackle football at age five may have 10 times the odds of developing CTE than if he had started at 14. But this isn't just about football. Girls soccer experiences more concussions per capita than any other sport. Let's face it, all youth sports come with an inherent risk of head trauma. We don't want to stop youth sports, we want to make them safer. We want to #EndCTE because my grandchildren deserve to get the same benefits from participation in sports that I received, but with a lot less risk.
