Many LGBTQ+ adults report facing discrimination in health care, and this impacts how they interact with health care in the future. 1 in 6 LGBTQ+ adults, and 1 in 5 transgender adults specifically, avoid health care due to previous discrimination. This is a significant issue with all areas of health, but especially for cancer screening and care. Health professionals must act and learn about LGBTQ+ experiences, inclusive and affirming care and language, and the unique needs and risks for LGBTQ+ populations to ensure health care is welcoming and safe for all. #clinicaltrials #cancerresearch #pride #pridemonth #healthequity #cancer #cancerscreening #cancerprevention #health #healthcare

Data drives clinical decision making – and collecting patient data on sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) can help create a more informed picture about the health of LGBTQ individuals USCDI Version 3 (USCDI v3) included new data elements that promote health equity. The use of USCDI v3 supports data users' abilities to identify, assess, and analyze gaps in care, which could in turn be used to inform and address the quality of health care through interventions and strategies. As we celebrate love, acceptance and diversity this Pride Month, we also want to shine a light on substance use disorder (SUD). SUD affects millions of people worldwide, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. According to NIDA, about 6.7% of adults who identify as LGBTQ+ misused opioids (prescription opioids or heroin) in the past year, compared to 3.6% of the overall adult population. Physicians are a trusted patient resource for health information. However, data from a Phreesia and Klick survey showed that 67% of LGBTQ+ patients said their doctor never brought up #cancerscreenings, including 48% of LGBTQ+ patients over 45 years old. To help LGBTQ+ patients incorporate more life-saving preventive health measures into their care, patient-provider conversations and broader screening recommendations from physicians are critical. But that’s just one piece of the puzzle.
