This week, CSPS launched the new debate series highlighting national security space debates with arguments from two analysts external to The Aerospace Corporation. For the next edition, Paula Thornhill and Charles Galbreath debate how the concept of "warfighter" should fit into United States Space Force culture. Thornhill argues that argues that the mission of the Space Force does not align with the long-standing paradigm defining warfighters by their direct role in organized violence. Space isnt just “space force” - it enables, supports, and protects military operations in the air, sea, and LAND. The Army is the largest user of space across the services. Getting space capabilities closer to the tactical fight, closer to the warfighter, and closer to decision makers is crucial to future success across the spectrum of military conflict.

#ICYMI • SecAF Frank Kendall redesignated SpOC West as U.S. Space Forces – Space, a United States Space Force Component Field Command directly subordinate to the Chief of Space Operations on Dec. 6th. The activation of S4S ensures space forces are most efficiently presented to U.S. Space Command to best meet challenges presented by the dynamic national security environment and the return to great power competition. "What does this mean for SpOC? SpOC remains the Service-retained #USSF force provider to all Combatant Commands. We will continue to generate, present, and sustain Space Forces to protect America and its Allies in, from, and to space, now and into the future." said Lt. Gen. Stephen Whiting, SpOC commander, "Congratulations to our teammates at S4S as they take on the responsibilities of being the USSF Service Component to #USSPACECOM. It is vital we be good teammates in support of their responsibilities. Going from oversimplified models found in 100% of military doctrine to some geometrically unorthodox alternatives: considering the Mobius strip and the Klein bottle. Why? To bring forth new theorization, we must also critically examine our core models (cubes, triads, loops, spheres, arrows leading to a single desired end-state, etc.) and shake things up by challenging those otherwise unquestioned assumptions on how to understand complex warfare. The character of war has forever changed! Exciting developments from the US Army through joint experimentation at Project Convergence Capstone 4 highlight the importance of tactical space-based capabilities. Effective communication and data sharing across the joint force are crucial for future operations. These advancements will provide significant value to dispersed units, enhancing their operational effectiveness, resilience, and survivability. I’m hoping that the “protect” includes protecting the ground, link and space segments from more than other space effects it has to include protecting the space enterprise from cyber effects. To do that we need more than piecemeal cyber defenses employed in each mission system as a stovepipe. Our cyber defense of the Space Enterprise has to be done using an Enterprise wide, integrated cyber system. Will that happen today? No. But we need to start ensuring the cyber defense has a real System Architecture in the same manner we approach Air and Missle Defense. It needs to share data between assets. Share C2 to the Combatant Commader who operates the space systems. We don’t need “IT system status” we need to ensure the USSPACECOM commander has an understanding of the impacts and mitigation of the cyber threat to Space Operations. Not just if a system is up or down. Our defense has to include more than the systems, it has to address how we defend the infrastructure we depend on. Just like we defend commercial ports and airfields used by military assets we need to defend the civilian infrastructure space depends on to transmit data and power our systems. It won’t matter how awesome your space based capability is if you can’t C2 it using the cyber infrastructure. You simply cannot “fight space” without cyber.
