UAP. UFO. Alien. Reverse engineering. The buzzwords may vary but the message remains steady: a taboo subject that has captivated moviegoers, scientists and the general public across nations throughout decades is starting to assert itself publicly. Whether one believes it's high time, or that the public is not yet ready for such mind-bending implications (especially in such a volatile global landscape) is up for opinion. However the extraordinary "technology propulsion" described in many of these testimonies already exists - in nature! Go to a summertime riverbed. Observe how insects dart in the sunlight. Not bees. Not dragonflies. Not butterflies. Observe the tiny ones, that move with aerial speed erratically, hovering and then vertically ascending or descending or flitting sideways in maneuvers mimicking that of these highly advanced craft being referenced. Hello everyone! Today we are introducing a new series of posts called “Historical Marker Highlights”, which, as the name implies, gives a shout out to historical markers relating to STEM history in Ohio. We want to highlight the fact that history occurs all around us and not just far away places. You never know, a notable piece of STEM history might have occurred right in your own backyard that might have played a role not just in local history but national history as well. For this first Historical Marker Highlight we are giving a shout out to an important experiment that has a connection to Ohio. This marker is especially fitting given that we are nearing the end of April and it is around this time of year that you hear the age-old phrase “April showers bring May flowers”. Today’s historical marker is located in Wilmington, Ohio and commemorates the Thunderstorm Project¹. The experiment was the first major study conducted in the United States that, you guessed it, examined thunderstorms². The study was funded and mandated by Congress in 1945, and became necessary as a result of World War II, which caused a boom in the aviation industry, aircraft incidents related to thunderstorms occurred more frequently². However, in the early 20th century, little was known about thunderstorms, making such a study necessary². The project occurred in two phases, with the first occurring in 1946 in Florida, due to the fact that thunderstorms happen there more often than anywhere else in North America³. The second phase took place in Clinton County in 1947¹. The area was chosen due to the frequency of weather fronts that occur there¹. That phase of the experiment involved pilots from the Clinton County Air Force Base, who (we kid you not), flew through storms in every stage of their development and different levels of intensity¹. Along with this, scientists used various weather instruments along with balloon soundings and radar¹. The observations that were collected provide a greater understanding of thunderstorms, particularly about their life cycles and their structure¹. The results from the study, which were analyzed by the University of Chicago, were published in 1949¹. For instance, as of 2021 the CDC reports that Black women's mortality rate during pregnancy was nearly 70 deaths for every 100,000 live births. I’m hoping this is really an “underpromise and overdeliver” situation. Unless TraCCS is augmented with sensor data from the Space Surveillance Network, it will not outperform (in every sense) the DoD’s capabilities. 5 things contribute to our perception of space object motion: 1) the actual physics and astrodynamics 2) our models of (1) which are flawed 3) the sensor data we obtain 4) our models of (3) which are flawed 5) our choice of method for statistical inference TraCSS, in order to truly be successful, must manage and minimize error and ambiguity from these. Specifically, invest in improving (2) and (4) with multi-fidelity models. The quality of (3) should determine the required fidelity of (2) quantified by its ability to predict (1) like (4) in its ability to predict (3). (5) must be comprised of an ensemble of methods because they each have their strengths and weaknesses. My $0.02

This was a great event. Thank you to the panellists Rebecca Ng, Suman Laudari, Kashmira Dave, PhD, Kate Mitchell, Swapneel Thite, Ph.D. and Stephen Abblitt, PhD for generously sharing their experiences and wisdom as TELedvisor researchers. Some of my key takeaways from the session are: Undertaking research helps us, as TELedvisors, to reflect on our own practice, supports our lifelong learning, is driven by our passion and curiosity, and allows us to tell and share stories and lived experiences in our voice with the community. Tips for those wanting to get started in research include: 1. Look for research opportunities, they are all around you in your daily work as a TELedvisor. 2. Read widely and examine how the articles are structured, methodologies used, writing style and gaps in the research. 3. Collaborating with others is key to success. 4. Gaining ethics approval for research by professional staff can be problematic or not supported in some universities, so look to partner with an academic or undertake research that does not require ethics such as literature reviews, autoethnographies or desktop reviews of public data. 5. Attend the ASCILITE Spring into Research School.
