Changing the world means having lots, and lots, and LOTS of naysayers. Many said it was unsuccessful (is this when I should bring up the thousands of patents Edison had rejected; or the multiple failed businesses of Abraham Lincoln before his presidency...etc?) I say it's writing the history books our great grandchildren will study from Mars. PS - this wouldn't happen without welders (all processes but my favorite, aerospace TIG) or welding engineers. SpaceX's progress on innovative space engineering is impressive. The disruptive development methods implemented on the project with the aim of massive industrial production make it possible to move forward quickly and reliably. Innovating, testing, analyzing, updating, progressing, starting over, is key. It is imperative that we develop iterative space exploration spacecraft projects in Europe, in parallel with current projects, in order to innovate faster, further.

The Future

Starship Flight 3 (unofficially IFT-3) is planned for NET 14 March 2024. Ship 28 (S28) and Booster 10 (B10) have been chosen to fly on this mission. Flight 3 is intended to perform a payload bay door test, fuel transfer from the header to the main tank, and an in-space Raptor Engine relight to demonstrate de-orbit capabilities. Ship 28 is intended to make a hard splashdown in the Indian Ocean, while Booster 10 will perform a soft splashdown in the Gulf of Mexico. Ship 28 and Booster 10 have now completed their testing campaigns. Ship 28 has done 2 spin primes, the first with 6 engines and later, after engine replacement, with 2 or 3 engines. It has also done 2 static fires, one with 6 and the other with 1 engine. Booster 10 is the first Booster to skip the spin prime test and go straight into a static fire with all of its engines. The full stack finally completed a full Wet Dress Rehearsal (WDR) on the 3rd of March 2024 after aborting two attempts earlier. The third flight test of SpaceX’s Starship could launch as soon as March 14, pending regulatory approval. Starship’s second flight test achieved a number of major milestones and provided invaluable data to continue rapidly developing Starship. Now, the third flight test aims to build on what they’ve learned from previous flights while attempting a number of ambitious objectives, including the successful ascent burn of both stages, opening and closing Starship’s payload door, a propellant transfer demonstration during the upper stage’s coast phase, the first ever re-light of a Raptor engine while in space, and a controlled reentry of Starship. It will also fly a new trajectory, with Starship targeted to splashdown in the Indian Ocean. This new flight path enables SpaceX to attempt new techniques like in-space engine burns while maximizing public safety.

Happy SpaceX launch day everyone! 🚀 There's been a 1.5 hour delay due to boats in the keep-out zone in the Gulf of Mexico but propellant loading has started about 15 minutes ago! Here's a few of the many ground-breaking differences compared to test flight #2: 1. There have been major updates to the launch infrastructure ("stage zero") which allow for faster propellant loading. Liquid Oxygen can now load in about 38 minutes instead of 1 hr 13 min! Faster prop load means less wastage due to boil-off! 2. This Ship has a fully functional payload bay door (instead of one that is welded shut). They have a Starlink dispenser inside. They plan to test the payload bay door in space for the first time. Hopefully next mission they will launch Starlink satellites (at dramatically lower cost than Falcon 9!) 3. They will attempt a propellant transfer in space as part of a NASA contract. If they succeed today they get $53 million from NASA to move forward. 4. There are more Starlink panels on the Starship, which should improve communications! 5. They will test a Raptor relight in space for the first time! 6. The Starship's engine gimbles have moved from hydraulic to electric, simplifying the engine compartment and reducing the risk of fire. 7. Instead of landing near Hawaii, the Starship will come down in the Indian Ocean, a more remote area. SpaceX will not attempt an engine relight and "flip maneuver". Instead, they have opted for a "belly flop" into the ocean. If all goes well, SpaceX will gather data on the heat shield tile performance. The last Starship lost many heat shield tiles, but SpaceX has been rapidly iterating on heat shield tile mounting and configuration.
