States are implementing groundbreaking changes to Medicaid programs to support individuals transitioning from correctional facilities back into communities. That’s why we’re hosting a Learning and Action Network in partnership with The Health and Reentry Project (HARP) to support state health and corrections officials. Individuals with involvement in the correctional system need access to coordinated programs across correctional, public safety, public health, and social support systems. Cross-sector partnerships are essential for these efforts — but many states need to establish or expand these partnerships. The network will provide a platform for peer learning through regular meetings and a listserv. The first sessions will take place on March 19 and 20. Important new brief: CCE calls on DC Department of Corrections for greater transparency on solitary confinement practices Over the last several years, we’ve worked alongside city leadership and community members to support the planning of a more humane and resident-centric correctional annex for the District. To determine whether the new facility should include units for solitary confinement and to support public consideration of proposed legislation, we sought data from DOC under DC’s Freedom of Information Act on its restrictive housing practices at the DC Jail. After more than two years of negotiation, DOC ultimately provided very limited and incomplete information - and the data that was provided raised a number of concerns. Our new brief, “More Data is Needed on the Use of Solitary Confinement in D.C.,” reviews the DOC’s solitary confinement data and argues that, without more data shared publicly, it is impossible for District-elected officials and leaders, advocates, and other stakeholders to develop and support policies around this issue of critical importance to both the protection of human rights and the promotion of a safer and healthier DC.
