🐾 This National Pet Month - Are We Truly Animal Lovers? As Gandhi famously said, "The greatness of a nation can be judged by the way its animals are treated." But how well do we treat our dogs as a nation? While many owners provide love and care, there's a stark contrast for countless others. According to PDSA research, while 24% of Britons own dogs, awareness of their welfare needs remains low. Only 13% correctly identified all five needs outlined by the Animal Welfare Act 2006. In terms of sourcing dogs, alarming statistics show 16% consider buying from puppy farms, contributing to animal suffering. Online platforms like Gumtree pose risks too, as dogs may come with undisclosed issues. Stray dog surveys reveal gaps in microchipping compliance, leaving many dogs vulnerable. Despite laws mandating microchipping, outdated or incorrect data persists, putting countless strays at risk. In conclusion, while some exemplify responsible ownership, there's much to be done to ensure the welfare of all dogs. Let's advocate for ethical sourcing, prioritize education, and strive to create a nation where every dog receives the love and care they deserve. #nationalpetmonth #doglovers #welovedogs #sussexdogs #dogsofsussex #dogfirstaidsussex #dogcare #mondaymotivation

Here’s how we build a community that benefits every animal involved: It starts with a bridge between brands and animal welfare organizations. Building a community that benefits everyone—people and pets alike—starts with the connection between brands and animal welfare organizations. It's not just about collaboration; it's about creating a thriving community where we and our furry friends truly thrive. Together, we can raise awareness, drive change, and significantly improve the lives of countless animals in need. Synergizing can advance our causes and foster a sense of support, innovation, and growth. This year's PDSA PAW Report is now live! 🐾 Each year, the PDSA Animal Wellbeing Report presents evidence from a nationally representative survey about how the UK’s dog, cat and rabbit owners are providing for their pet's welfare needs 🐶 Here’s just a small peek into what they have discovered this year: - 51% of the UK population own a pet - Of those owners whose dog was not microchipped, 16% said they had not thought about it - The most common reasons owners gave for not having their cat microchipped were that their cat doesn’t go outside (21%), is unlikely to stray (17%) and they don’t think it’s necessary (16%) - In 2024, 78% of cats are microchipped (pre-legislation) Want to find out more? Today I am over in beautiful New Zealand at the 2024 Companion Animal Conference. The theme this year is Companion Animals in a Changing World, looking at the current and future trends affecting pet ownership. The question I often ask people, is what happens to pet ownership if we do not start thinking about sustainability, how does this affect our ability to produce food for cats and dogs to eat, and what impact will this eventually have on animal welfare. As an industry we need to educate, we need to empower and we need to enact change to ensure that we continue to do what we do best, and that is create a better world for cats and dogs. Today we are proudly talking about what Royal Canin is doing to help create a positve outcome for Pets, Planet and our People. #royalcanin #companionanimalconference2024

Anyone who knows me (or has seen my Instagram account where 90% of the content relates to this!), knows that one of the areas I’m most passionate about outside of work is animal welfare. So when I came across a new certification program through Best Friends Animal Society and Southern Utah University focused on Dog Lifesaving, I jumped at the opportunity to participate this fall. Over the past two months, I’ve learned from experts in the field and explored ways to save the lives of dogs in animal shelters through adoption, dog behavior and well-being, foster programs, canine handling, shelter medicine and more. The ultimate goal of the course is to increase animal lifesaving nationwide. Aside from the deep understanding I gained of the complex animal welfare ecosystem, I was also charged with designing a pilot program as my culminating course assignment. It has been so rewarding to work on this practical and implementable pilot program for a local animal shelter. The process has reminded me yet again of the incredible power of feedback and collaboration–in this instance, through partnering with local shelter team members, as well as our wonderful course lead Caitlin Gill of Best Friends’ Learning Advancement Department, and program participants from all around the country in various roles at shelters. Where I had ideas, but perhaps not the inside industry knowledge or data points, they helped me advance the program objectives. Where I developed KPIs, they supplemented with additional ideas to prove the value of the program. And where I dove deep on how to amplify the program and participants through marketing, they shared end-user perspectives on what might make for the most engaging and impactful initiatives. Suffice to say, while this certainly falls into the “extra-curricular” activity category, there will be a few new tools in my toolkit to bring back to my full-time professional role too! I’m really looking forward to not only the next steps with the pilot program, but also exploring ways to incorporate the course lessons into my animal welfare volunteering work too. Thanks so much to Best Friends Animal Society and Southern Utah University for the impactful learning experience! If anyone is interested in learning more about the program and my experience, I’d be happy to chat: https://lnkd.in/g5-MSpZE Julie Castle Cathie Myers #animalwelfare #continuingeducation #volunteering #animalrescue
