I had the opportunity to be involved in the co-design of the Tennis Australia Learn 2 Lead program back in March and, since then, the privilege of presenting to each group of participants across the country as a guest speaker during workshops. 🎤 Some things I’ve learnt along the way, that I spoke about included: ➡️📚1. Study your own user manual - spend some time learning about yourself; your values, strengths, likes/dislikes, how you learn best, your personality type, how you best can work to lead at this stage (I.e is it working with large groups of people, or do you prefer 1 on 1?). This self awareness takes time and is rare for young people to have a solid grasp on. Your unique character is something to be built upon, not hidden. ➡️ 👥 2. Identify your circle of influence now and begin to lead - we all influence people everyday, our friends, family, coworkers etc. Our actions and words have ripple effects. Set an example, give some extra encouragement, leave things a little bit better than how you find them etc. Leadership, particularly for people starting out, doesn’t have to mean big gestures. Also, surround yourself with people that inspire you to be your best self. A saying goes that we are the average of the 5 people we spend the most time with. Also seek out values in people you meet that you wish to emulate - find role models. ➡️🙌 3. Say yes to opportunities - particularly opportunities that: excite you, help you to step outside your comfort zone a little bit, expand your circle of influence and vary from your typical activities. The more we try, the easier it is to narrow in on your purpose as you grow. ➡️🏗️ 4. Build your reputation - now is the time to start to be noticed how you wish to be. Never discount any experiences, as everything you have experienced have shaped your values and strengths today. Particularly for interviews or applications, it doesn’t matter how irrelevant an experience may seem, you need to just show how the experience shaped a strength/value/passion, how that will help you be successful in a role and how it aligns with the mission of the company/scholarship etc you are applying for. So glad to hear of the success of this program and very happy to see the growing confidence of young people to step into more roles in tennis! 🎾

Executive leader focussed on creating value leading to powerful client relationships and financially stronger organizations. Passionate about agriculture, energy and making the world better.
Like any great business leaders, coaches make a choice as to whether they learn from criticism or lean into a peer group who may suggest there is nothing wrong. I have always admired Mike Babcock and have no doubt he has reflected on his time with the Leafs and will approach the Blue Jackets team with renewed albeit a different leadership style. #leadership #teambuilding

Great sports coaches are also great leaders and make their players better "people" as a whole. (2 is my favorite - I have read this quote daily for the past several years). 1. "Mediocre people don't like high achievers, and high achievers don't like mediocre people." 2. "There's the pain of discipline, and the pain of regret. If you choose the pain of discipline, you'll never have to deal with the pain of disappointment." 3. "We're not going to talk about what we're going to accomplish. We're going to talk about how we're going to do it." 4. "Be on time, because it shows you care." 5. "The expectations are what they are here, and we don't run around talking about them." https://lnkd.in/g9snzcmN
