The unprecedented cargo volume from 2020 to 2022 left no question – seaports need to prepare now for more cargo growth on the horizon. The Port of #newyork and #newjersey, already the busiest container port on the East Coast, is wasting no time building both the infrastructure and relationships to weather whatever the next storm brings in the shipping world. The preparation for that growth is underway at the Port of New York and New Jersey, as multiple capital improvement projects kicked off in 2023. Ground was broken on the $220 million Port Street Corridor Improvement Project, overhauling Port Newark’s road network to allow for safer, more efficient trucking operations. The port’s on-dock ExpressRail system is also being upgraded as the final design of the Southbound Connector to give #freight rail operations additional flexibility and capacity will be completed by midyear 2024 with construction to follow. Perhaps the most impactful project will take place in the harbor itself. In December, the Port Authority approved $19.2 million to study next steps as the port and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers look to deepen the port’s shipping channels to 55 feet. The project would allow the port to accommodate bigger container ships and ease harbor navigation. The study now includes channels leading to the Howland Hook Marine #terminal on Staten Island, after new operator CMA CGM pledged to modernize the facility and attract additional #cargo activity. The impetus of this session comes from a basic question that I ask BCOs/IMCs/NVOs/truckers: Do you believe the railroads have made enough structural changes to be able to handle the next surge in volume better than in 2020 and 2021? The majority of respondents tell me they do not believe the railroads are any better prepared today than pre-pandemic to handle an upswing in volume without major disruptions. Yes, the J.B. Hunt Transport Services, Inc., Hub Group and Schneider folks are confident, but many others are highly skeptical anything will change. In this session, we will give Shawn Tureman of Norfolk Southern, Thomas Williams of BNSF Railway, and Dan Bresolin of CN an opportunity to explain why they are more prepared, and how specific capital expenditures will translate into a better experience that customers can see, feel, or put their finger on in the future. This will be the continuation of a conversation we began at #inland23 in September.

The Port of Baltimore is making significant strides toward reopening after the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge. Here’s what we know: • A temporary navigational channel, measuring 280 feet wide and 35 feet deep, is anticipated to be operational by the end of April 20241. This initial channel will provide limited access. • The full reopening of the permanent channel, which spans a width of 700 feet and a depth of 50 feet, is expected by the end of May 20242. Once this channel is fully operational, port access will return to normal capacity. The collaborative efforts of engineers, government bodies, and local partners have been instrumental in achieving these milestones. WASHINGTON — About $290 million of $653 million in new federal grants awarded by the Biden administration will be used to improve truck capacity at U.S. ports. The U.S. Department of Transportation announced on Friday the winners of the latest annual round of funding under the Port Infrastructure Development Program (PIDP), administered by DOT’s Maritime Administration. Of the 41 port projects receiving money through the program in 2023, 11 feature significant improvements aimed at speeding truck freight in and out of coastal and inland ports. “This is a day of good news for America’s supply chains and good news for every American interested in seeing the price of goods go down and stay down,” said Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg at a press briefing prior to the announcement. “There is still an enormous amount of work to do. The goal is not to get American supply chains back to what they looked like in 2019 — which was adequate on a good day but not able to handle a disruption. Port of Virginia launches expanded rail yard at Norfolk International Terminals The Port of Virginia has opened a larger intermodal yard at Norfolk International Terminals (NIT), aiming to enhance resilience against weather disruptions without significantly impacting cargo owners. This $83 million project, completed in two years, increases annual on-dock rail capacity by 455,000 TEUs, bringing the total rail capacity at the port to 2 million TEUs when combined with Virginia International Gateway (VIG). Norfolk Southern Railway is the primary rail provider at NIT, while CSX handles containers routed through VIG. Stephen Edwards, CEO of the Virginia Port Authority, stated that the expanded rail yard will improve rail service reliability and consistency. The additional capacity allows for quicker recovery from disruptions, such as storms, by providing extra space to manage backlogs and reduce dwell times. Midwestern cargo owners will benefit most from the expanded yard, as the port annually moves over 100,000 pier containers to Chicago and 25,000-45,000 containers to cities like Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, Detroit, and Louisville. Additionally, the Port of Virginia is nearing completion of a major overhaul to accommodate the largest container ships visiting the US. This includes a dredging project to deepen the harbor to 55 feet, expected to be finished next year, and the first phase of expanding NIT’s North terminal, set to be operational in 2025.
