Hey y'all, I have a favor to ask (please and thank you!): One of my strategic partners-in-crime, Allie Robino, and I were nominated for the Dynamic Duo Rosie Award. It's so nice to be recognized for the work you do right?!?!?! If you've ever worked with either of us and have it in ya to vote, we'd so greatly appreciate it! I don't know if that's a weird ask to make but here I am, making it anyway. Appreciate you all AND all the folks who have trusted their brands/businesses/clients with our brains over the years! #brandstrategy #commsstrategy

Fractional commercial leader/consultant, mentor, listener, relationship builder and driver of commercial activities.
Weeks, months have passed since I’ve made my last post, why? 📈 Building a new contact base for supporting Contech innovators. 📓 The little black book of numbers gathered after more than 3 decades in the construction tech space – thrown in the 🚮. You really know who your true friends and established contacts are! In with the new and out with the old. 📢 People may say yes to connect and share conversations with, but never commit. Keep trying is my way of working, the real winners are the ones who are transparent and true to their word. Am I winning? No, as it's not about me, success is built on teams so.... 🔎 Focusing 100% on supporting some great businesses on commercial awareness and growth initiatives is refreshing. Has it been easy, it most definitely hasn’t! 📱 Paperless is an awesome tool, simple to set up and use, and makes a positive impact to carbon reduction. Raymond Castelyn co-founded this business and shows an immense passion in driving out paper-based processes. 🏢 Kabandy has gained great traction in Europe and now it’s time to establish a UK presence. I’ll be focusing more time on this Diego d'Udekem as I know my time has been at a reduced capacity to date. 🏗 Priestland Consulting Ltd has an amazing journey and represents 100’s of Contech companies around the world through its C-Tech Club – great work John Priestland. So what's next..... ➡ Keep doing what I love - working in the contech space ➡ Connecting and establishing new business relationships ➡ Keeping that daily work/life balance 🏃♂️ 🚴♂️ 🐶

Looking back: When I joined Cedar Fair in 2011 the company was defending itself against attacks from an activist investor and had lost the support of their largest investors. The activist had successfully pushed the longstanding CEO to stepdown – to be effective a few months after my arrival -and they had essentially orchestrated a full replacement of the Board of Directors at the next annual meeting. The former COO was suing the company for wrongful dismissal (seeking to force the company to rehire him) and the CFO had resigned. There were some other meaningful challenges, but that just feels like piling on to make my point. So where do you start? Step one, prove to the team that you are one of them. Traditionally only the CEO and the CFO had access to the top floor of the headquarters building. It doesn’t sound like much, but unlocking that door made an impact. Also, my long-standing habit of wandering around put a face on the CEO title and allowed me to explain how to pronounce my last name. Step two, ask the leadership team what we should do. What became clear very quickly was that this was an extremely capable team, with great ideas that just needed some CEO endorsement. I can’t emphasize this enough. I look at delegation like throwing a pass in football, it takes a great receiver to turn it into a touchdown. This team knew what to do when you threw them the ball. Step three, surround yourself with people you trust who are experts in the stuff you know little about. We hired Andrew an investment banker who I had experience with from another Board. We needed to know how much the company was worth and his advice was invaluable on any number of fronts (at that time and for all my years with the company). We signed up a former colleague – Bob - who leads the board recruitment practice for a major firm. Beyond being very good at what he does, he knew me well and believed me when I said I wanted strong thought-partners on the board. Step four, get lucky. I failed at recruiting a CFO from the outside and ultimately promoted Brian, a long tenured veteran of the company. My best failure ever! During the few months when the retiring CEO remained, we occasionally had our differences. I need to acknowledge that when I had made decisions he didn’t agree with they conveniently surfaced when I wasn’t in town. That meant that Richard (COO) took the shots intended for me. He never complained about it. It takes a different forum to discuss how the challenges all resolved themselves but let’s just say that we celebrated when the activists exited earlier than expected; the new board proved to be great thought-partners for me and mentors for our team; and, the Ohio Supreme Court ruled in our favor on the wrongful dismissal case. With that behind us, let the FUN begin!
