I'm happy to share our most recent research paper, which describes a method for establishing a tomato regeneration and transformation system to target the gene responsible for ripening in tomatoes and produce a long-lived tomato by using CRISPR CAS/9 technique. However, more analysis is needed to confirm the effectiveness of our constructs by examining the transgenic plantlets using sequencing and other molecular techniques, which will soon be available, so stay tuned for the next

Uncovering PFAS Risks: Insights from Fathead Minnow Larvae Transcriptomics A recent study used a high-throughput transcriptomic assay to determine the concentration at which 20 PFASs elicit a gene expression response in fathead minnow larvae. This assay measures biological effects, although it is not directly linked to specific toxicity outcomes. The median concentration that elicited this transcriptomic response (referred to as the transcriptomic-based point of departure [tPOD]) was found to be 10 µM. Among the PFASs tested, longer-chain carboxylic acids were identified as some of the most potent, eliciting transcriptomic responses at concentrations below 1 µM. The results of the study showed that the observed tPODs were significantly higher than PFAS levels detected in tributaries of the North American Great Lakes, indicating a substantial margin of safety for humans. Therefore, there is no need to be alarmed about PFAS contamination when levels are very low and biologically ineffective, even for small organisms. However, it's important to reiterate that the international PFAS emergency calls for increased funding for research into new, sustainable and effective bioremediation methods, such as the ongoing project led by ASPIDIA. 🌊 Scientists have uncovered a novel gene that indirectly enhances photosynthesis in cyanobacteria 🍀 🌊🍀 Proteins play crucial roles in regulating nitrogen assimilation in cyanobacteria, where nitrate is a primary nitrogen source. 🌊🍀 The protein NirP1, upregulated in low carbon conditions, binds to nitrite reductase (NiR), leading to nitrite accumulation and excretion. 🌊🍀 Excess nitrite inhibits photosynthesis. 🌊🍀 NirP1 likely competes with ferredoxin Fd1 for NiR binding, hindering nitrite reduction. 🌊🍀 NirP1 transcription is controlled by NtcA and an unknown factor, linking carbon and nitrogen assimilation. 🌊🍀 NirP1's action may prevent nitrite poisoning, possibly by storing it in the periplasm. 🌊🍀 This suggests a mechanism for cyanobacteria to regulate nitrite release based on physiological conditions. 🌊🍀 Despite the intuitive point of regulating nitrogen assimilation during nitrate uptake or reduction, NirP1's role highlights a different control point. 🌊🍀 Electron availability and potential benefits to coexisting microbes may influence nitrite excretion. 🌊🍀 While Prochlorococcus lacks NirP1 homologs, other cyanobacteria likely benefit from NirP1-mediated regulation in diverse environments.
