An interesting article from McKinsey & Company illustrates the potential of #DigitalTwins to support #Hydrogen transition. Part of its interest resides in the list of concrete #technology uses at all phases from design to operations and by all #technical and #management stakeholders.

Ceres, has joined forces with AtkinsRéalis, a world-leading design, #engineering and project management organisation, to deliver the front-end engineering design (#FEED) for a #commercial multi-megawatt modularised #hydrogen production system based on Ceres’ robust, low-cost and highly #efficient solid oxide #technology. Solid oxide #electrolysis (#SOEC) provides a route to generate #greenhydrogen over 25% more efficiently than incumbent lower temperature technology. Ceres and AtkinsRéalis’ collaboration aims to create a blueprint of the optimum system architecture for a 100MW+ electrolyser system to produce green hydrogen, as a building block for gigawatt-scale plants. Great progress in our green hydrogen scale-up journey

Great news today! Pyrowave expands its #microwave technology to cement decarbonization in partnership with the Université de Sherbrooke with the support of Pôle de recherche et d'innovation en matériaux avancés du Québec (PRIMA Québec) Instead of burning fuel to heat limestone, Pyrowave's electrified technology will use microwaves powered by renewable energy. This process could reduce greenhouse gas emissions from cement production by about 35%. By using microwaves, the process can also produce a highly concentrated stream of CO2 only from limestone decomposition, reducing capture and sequestration costs by avoiding costly separation from a diluted combustion stream. The Pyrowave platform thus has the potential to produce low-carbon cement at a competitive cost.

They then transform the captured carbon into valuable products such as fuels and chemicals or use it to make building materials. Earlier this year, the #DOE rolled out $2.5 billion to fund 2 carbon capture #initiatives aimed to boost #investment in #technologies that capture, transport, and store carbon. The Department also opened new funding opportunities in May worth $2.25 billion for the validation and testing of large-scale, commercial carbon storage projects. Is there a publication that presents a summary of the operations and maintenance costs, USD/t CO2 captured, of the currently available technologies? Similarly, it is also necessary to compare the approximate investment amounts, USD/t CO2 captured, for the construction of these infrastructures. Another aspect to compare is if the process generates any by-product and if it can be sold, possible income from incentives, subsidies, carbon credits, etc. That is, information to be able to evaluate the potential economic impact of incorporating CCUS technologies into industrial processes. When it comes to the energy transition and hard-to-abate industries, a few big markets tend to come to mind - industry, transportation, power. These, of course, are important markets to address but what about those ever-present sectors that are less obvious but could make huge impacts? Take cement production, for instance. Cement has become the basic building block of our society. In fact, I recently read that after water, cement is the most widely used substance on Earth and its production is responsible for about 8% of CO2 emissions globally. At Air Liquide, we know that our greatest impact comes from helping customers address their own decarbonization needs which is why we're proud to join Southern States Energy Board and the Ash Grove Cement Company for a carbon capture demonstration project and front-end engineering design (FEED) study funded by the DOE Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations. Air Liquide’s CryocapTM FG carbon capture technology will capture and purify up to 95% of the carbon dioxide generated by the cement plant. This project is one of eight selected by the DOE to receive funding and adds to Air Liquide’s pipeline of projects focused on industrial carbon capture.
