🌊 Something truly remarkable is happening in Europe. 🌊 Beachgoers with mobility issues now have the chance to experience the beauty of the Mediterranean like never before. Picture this: a wooden walkway leading to a solar-powered chair set on a single track. Users transfer themselves into the recliner and "drive" into the water via a remote-control device. Once in the sea, they can lift themselves out of the chair for a swim, and then return to the chair for the trip back to the docking station. It's a groundbreaking solution that allows individuals with mobility issues to bypass the sandy obstacles and enjoy the sea on their own terms, without needing extra hands to assist them. Inclusion. According to WTM Global Report, tourists abandon sun loungers in favour of new experiences: “Holidaymakers seem more determined to make the most of their precious time away – instead of just sun-bathing, more of them want to create treasured memories by booking experiences and excursions to get under the skin of their destination, to explore cultures, cuisine and nature". “After lockdown, we also saw that growing desire to enjoy the outdoors and connect with other people – but in an increasingly sustainable way". My current search history: → Sustainable travel Seoul → Sustainable activities Seoul → Eco-Tourism/Agro-Tourism Seoul → Fair trade souvenir Seoul What I found: → Hikes, public parks, bird watching → “Seoul Declaration on Fair Tourism” → Articles about bikes and public transportation → Plastic-free hotels nowhere near where I want to stay Basically a lot of buzzwords and not a lot of information targeted towards someone planning a trip (me). I realized I needed to get more specific. I searched for sustainable tourism, but within my interests, and I discovered: → Seongsu-dong and its urban renewal projects → Hongdae Art Free and Hope Market → Bukchon Traditional Culture Center → 15 Seoul Cultural Events this October → International Language Exchange Meetup → Templestays in Hongdae and Jinkwansa My buzzword? “Local” → Locally owned → Locally made, or Seoul-based → Family-owned local restaurants  → Seoul history museum → Seoul cultural center A few months before my trip, I also follow: → Local Instagram accounts → City event, culture, or history accounts → Subreddits about the city My journey to become a more conscious traveler has led me away from “Top 20” lists, at least in the broader sense. I’m seeing that this way of travel takes more time and effort. The buzzwords haven’t quite caught up to actionable information, at least not in Seoul. I know that changing how I plan will lead to a better experience in the end. I can still do some stereotypical “tourist-y” things, but without the cookie-cutter itineraries. "Neighbourhood tourism" has become extremely popular over the last few years, leading to new avenues for tour companies to take their clients. Referred to as "life-seeing" rather than sight-seeing, neighbourhood tourism leads to "authentic experiences that are representative of local culture". A 2023 report by Booking.com found that 75% of surveyed participants wanted "authentic experiences that are representative of local culture." Norbert Kettner, CEO of the Vienna Tourist Board, stated that, "Guests now seek immersive experiences and connection with local identity and lifestyles, valuing regional specialties, crafts, and culture." Vienna's "Heartbeat Streets" encourages visitors to positively impact their destinations while enriching their own travel experiences by "venturing into less explored areas... actively contribut[ing] to the development of the city and its communities," according to Kettner. This shows a bigger issue: residents can't afford to visit their landmarks when places get popular with tourists. Or, due to commercialisation, standardisation, and much more, they are not interesting to the residents. 🙅🏼 This issue isn't just in Peru. My host specified that Parisians do not go up the Eiffel Tower in Paris. In Tanzania, not everyone in Moshi climbs Kilimanjaro if not for work, and in the Netherlands, opinions about Amsterdam are strongly divided. Here's a bit of what we can do to help make sure residents can enjoy their places too: 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬: Make it cheaper for residents to visit their famous sites. 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲-𝐋𝐞𝐝 𝐓𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐦: Support tourism projects run by residents and tribes. This way, they benefit directly from visitors. 𝐂𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐄𝐱𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐬: Establish ways for tourists to really connect with residents, which will help everyone understand each other better. 𝐄𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐬: Teach tourists and local businesses about the importance of including residents in tourism. This can help shift focus to support everyone involved. 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐋𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐁𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬: Encourage visitors to visit small restaurants, shops run by local artisans, and other local businesses.
