Nearly 100 years ago, in 1926, Harvard-trained historian, Carter G. Woodson, established “Negro History Week” in an effort to bring to the public’s attention the important developments that merit emphasis. Over the course of the next several decades, countless mayors and political leaders would come to recognize this week and honor the historical contributions of Black Americans throughout history. By the late 60’s this annual, weekly celebration had grown to a month’s long celebration on many college campuses and by 1976, 50 years after the first “Negro History Week”, Black History Month was officially recognized by President Gerald Ford in order to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.” Today, as our country continues to struggle with race relations, CCN Pharmacy encourages all of us to return to the original intent of this important month and call to mind the important developments and achievements of Black Americans throughout history. #blackhistorymonth #africanamericans #blackamericans

"Can research be trustworthy if the communities it needs most don't trust it?" A study (R.C. Warren et al., 2019), by researchers from Tuskegee University and Morehouse School of Medicine, in partnership with Eli Lilly and Company, sheds light on a critical factor for increasing Black participation in research: 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀. Today marks the beginning of Black History Month in the United States and we want to take this opportunity to reflect and celebrate the remarkable contributions of African-Americans to our nation, healthcare, and ASP. ASP was started by the visionary Dr. Tralance Addy who brought his interest in global health to the challenge of providing sterility to healthcare professionals. Because of Dr. Addy’s vision and leadership, millions of people have been protected during their most critical moments. Dr. Addy's impact is profound, echoing the legacy of trailblazers like Dr. James McCune Smith, the first African-American to earn a medical degree in 1837. From pioneering the modern blood bank to shaping the National Prevention Strategy, African-American healthcare professionals have left a lasting impact. Black History Month is a celebration of this rich and diverse history. It's an opportunity to recognize achievements across every facet of our society. He advocated for economic self-reliance and vocational training, believing that practical skills were key to improving the social status of African-Americans in a post-slavery society. As the founder of Tuskegee Institute, he provided a platform for thousands to gain education and skills that were otherwise denied to them. Washington's philosophy of 'lifting the veil of ignorance' resonates even today. His belief in hard work, education, and self-help as means to advance civil rights and economic progress laid the groundwork for future generations. Born on December 29, 1907, in Washington, D.C., Weaver's journey exemplifies resilience, intellect, and unwavering commitment to social progress. 🎓 **Education and Expertise** Weaver's academic prowess led him to Harvard University, where he earned multiple degrees, including the **first Ph.D. in economics conferred on a person of color**. From groundbreaking inventions to pivotal roles in scientific advancements, Black Americans have played an integral part in shaping our nation's greatness. Innovations like Garrett Morgan's three-way traffic light, Dr. Charles Drew's blood collection system, and Katherine Johnson's pioneering work at NASA highlight the ingenuity and brilliance of Black individuals throughout history. Despite these significant contributions, systemic discrimination persists, underscoring the ongoing fight for racial equity and social justice. At NACDD, we remain loyal in our commitment to advancing health equity and dismantling barriers to opportunity.
