Launched this week – VOICES of Black Women — a pivotal long-term study led by the American Cancer Society to better understand how and why Black women are disproportionately impacted by health conditions like cancer. The study will focus on the lived experiences of Black women so that we can strive for enhanced health outcomes for generations to come. Today, I'm speaking on three panels discussing our Brachytherapy innovation work at Mission-Driven Tech and how we're supporting the global Cervical Cancer #Elimination movement. In prep, last night I watched "The Cancer Detectives" on PBS, the revolutionary story of the invention & mass adoption of the Pap Test, the foundational building block of #CervicalCancer prevention. The documentary told the stories of: ➡ George Papanicolaou, the inventor of the Pap Test ➡ Mary Papanicolaou, George's remarkable & incomparable wife, who had *DAILY* Pap Tests for 21 YEARS to advance George's research ➡ Dr. Helen Dickens, a Black female physician pioneer who brought #CervicalCancer screening to Black women by building trust and offering care in community Before the Pap Test was introduced, Cervical Cancer was the leading cause of cancer-related deaths among American women. Following mass adoption, diagnoses dropped more than 70%. How did this small circle of physicians & public health activists change the world? 💥 Breakthrough scientific research: discovery, invention & innovation that established an entirely new screening system for cancer prevention 💥 Coalition building with a single shared goal: a remarkable and unusual team with a clear vision: save American women from cancer 💥 Powerful people using their platforms to promote change: government, medical, community & pop culture leaders including Lucille Ball smashing stigma to promote the Pap test 💥 Acknowledgement of systemic racial biases: community efforts, specifically led by Dr. Dickens, to bring screening to Black communities for all women to access care 💥 Translating science to the public with media: news, magazine & community efforts to educate, encourage & empower women, creating a new demand engine where by 1958, women were *independently asking their doctors for the Pap Test* I don't often point to medical practices from the 1950s as a blueprint for change today. However, this documentary gives me hope that timeless strategies rooted in science and activism laid the foundation to end Cervical Cancer 70 years ago, setting up the fundamentals for us to now realize #Elimination today. What enables optimal care for #OesophagogastricCancer? What hinders it? A survey by our VICS Optimal Care Summits identified key barriers, enablers and preferences from multidisciplinary health professionals across Victoria. Sarcoma Awareness Month is celebrated in July to raise awareness of sarcoma. The theme for Sarcoma Awareness month is “Raising Awareness to Create Survivors”. This month is the perfect opportunity to pay tribute to those who have been impacted by sarcoma and to advocate for the needs of those who live with sarcoma each and every day. Wear Yellow Day is held on July 12th to encourage everyone to wear yellow to show support for sarcoma patients and their families. On this day, the whole family, even pets, can don their yellow for sarcoma awareness. If you dress up, make sure to share photos using the hashtag #WearYellowDay. July 26th is when you Light Up for Sarcoma, by illuminating various monuments and buildings. Sarcoma is a type of cancer that forms in the body’s tissues that connect, surround, or support other structures, with more than 70 varieties. This cancer can negatively impact vessels, blood, fat, muscle, the lining of the joints, and tendons. Kiana Wooten has been a guiding light in recent years and it’s ironically because she spent time wandering in the dark. She was diagnosed with breast cancer back in 2019 and when it happened, she felt betrayed by her own body. She didn’t know how life would turn out for her, how she’d be able to work with her condition, or how she’d manage to provide for her family. But since she wasn’t faced with any other palatable options, she decided to keep groping in the dark to discover her own light. Her eyes were opened to the strength she didn’t know she had; eventually, she got a clear view of what she truly needed to treasure in life and locked on to them to keep herself focused. She learned to embrace her situation, as exemplified by her decision to embrace the wounds of her battle with cancer, and eventually, she started sharing her story with the world. As the author of “The Breast Decision,” Wooten has become a beacon for women dealing with breast cancer. Through this book, which captured part of her journey, she shared how she turned the devastating news of her diagnosis into a productive and positive life path. She charted a course, and because of it, there are now women all over the world who won’t feel as lost as she once was.
