At a graduation ceremony at a church in Geneva, New York on January 23, 1849, Geneva Medical College bestows a medical degree upon Elizabeth Blackwell, the first woman in the United States to receive one. Despite the near-uniform opposition of her fellow students and medical professionals, Blackwell pursued her calling with an iron will and dedicated her life to treating the sick and furthering the cause of women in medicine.⁠ ⁠ Blackwell’s family was remarkable by any standard. Her father was a staunch abolitionist and both her brother and his wife were active in the women’s suffrage movement. Another sister-in-law was the first female minister to be ordained in a mainstream Protestant denomination, and Elizabeth’s younger sister Emily also studied medicine.⁠ ⁠ A gifted student, Elizabeth felt compelled to become a doctor after a conversation with a dying friend, who told her that her ordeal had been that much worse because her physicians were all men.⁠ Elizabeth’s family approved of her ambition, but the rest of society still found the idea of female doctors laughable. It was, quite literally, a joke even to the men who accepted her to Geneva Medical College—the question of whether or not to accept a woman was put up to a vote of the students, who voted in favor as a practical joke. The next generation of physicians will meet this challenge via their increased diversity in culture, lived experiences, and backgrounds. Charles R Drew University, the only historically black medical institution west of the Mississippi, embodies this ethos as it welcomes its inaugural class of medical students as an independent medical school. The students are primarily from under-represented minorities in medicine, are bilingual and multilingual, and come from the communities that they hope one day to serve. Culturally influenced care improves adherence and patient outcomes while providing an equitable workforce. How has the face of medicine changed since you first joined the medical community? International Medical Graduate representation in Collegiate and Academic leadership in medicine has been scientifically proven to increase positive clinical outcomes, not just in culturally diverse cohorts and patient populations, but overall improvement across all demographics. Yes! IMG doctors like Dr. Ruaa Elteriefi MD FACP who are Program Directors and/or leadership positions in residency programs are quite literally changing the face of American Healthcare and bridging care gaps on a daily basis. Personally, this is one of my biggest inspirations to continue fighting the good fight of #HealthEquity through #Diversity. Several theories arise referencing cultural competency, accurate communication for patients with language challenges, and diversity of therapeutic modalities tailored with greater precision and personalization as potential avenues and strengths that are fueling these initiatives with proven results. The integration of internationally-trained physicians and scientists represents a one-of-a-kind opportunity to bridge care gaps among every single member that composes a part of our society.
