Pleased to share that I've just hit my 5-year anniversary at RSPCA Australia. 🐾   Can't believe where the time has gone to be honest. When I left the UK for literal greener pastures in NZ, coming to Australia was still a pie in the sky dream. Let alone getting a role in the exact area I'm passionate about and progressing my career to the point of managing RSPCA Approved itself. 🐔 🐷 🐟   I know I'm very fortunate and lucky to work in a space that I truly enjoy, and that intrigues and challenges me every day. No two days are the same at RSPCA, and when working across multiple industries in a fairly unique position, there can be some real curly issues that crop up.   I'm not really one for the shared learnings posts on LinkedIn, but over the last 5 years there are a few things that have solidified in my mind that someone might need to hear today...   😎 There's plenty of different management styles, but what your team really need is for you to show up as the right manager for their individual preferences. 💬 Sometimes the biggest hurdle to overcome is with internal stakeholders. It's not about being defensive but finding shared values, commonalities and understanding the root of their concerns to find a solution. 🚜 Agriculture is really bloody cool. That's all. 🕊 Animal welfare is a complex space. Rooting yourself in the evidence and not getting caught up in emotions can be hard but is so worthwhile. The pragmatic approach is less 'sexy', but it gets you results. 💐 No one is ever truly ready for stepping up, and nearly everyone whatever their level has moments of doubt in themselves. Don't forget to back yourself, because there are lots of people who do believe in you.   For proof of life outside work, here are the two boys that are keeping me busy, happy and importantly outdoors in all weather. Having something to force you out of the office on time and get out in nature is a real blessing. 🐴

Beth and I have been discussing a groomer for our dog, Siska. She’s got such a thick coat it’s difficult for us to get her fully bathed at home. There’s a local groomer but since we’re not on Facebook, we didn’t know how to contact the owner. It turns out that the groomer came to the office where Beth works — great! Beth asked her about her business and told her about Siska. She gave a ballpark price but went on to say how her calendar is booked until July(!) And the conversation ended with a business card exchange. As I’ve reflected on this, there are several thoughts about sales and small business that come to mind: 1. It’s possible the groomer really is booked out months in advance. However, she may have also been trying to instill a sense of success by boasting about her busy schedule. What I do know is that the groomer didn’t ask questions such as: “How soon are you wanting to get Siska in for an appointment?” “Has she been to a groomer before? How does she do?” “What a beautiful dog. I love her coat. Would you like to know about our [ promo/offer ] to keep her in tip top shape?” 2. Beth takes people at their word. I love it about her. But as a potential customer, she could have asked some questions. “We’re wanting to have her groomed before we leave for our trip in July. Would that be possible?” 3. Ask for our contact info. “If you share your phone number with me I can text or call you if we have an opening. And, you can opt into my email, too. That way you don’t miss our specials and promos if you’re not on Facebook.” If you’re a dog groomer, you’re firstly a salesperson for your business. I learned that hard truth the hard way in my own business. When you just do the small things and slow down enough to serve, you’ll be busier than ever. Perhaps that’s the case for this groomer and if so, then well done! But even so, what you do (or don’t do) today matters 6 months from now. This mandate slows down our growth, and risks burn-out of trainers on staff as we see increased demand for dog training services in the Denver area.
