At the "Deutscher Bauernverband Veredlungstag 2023" (German Farmers' Association Finishing Day 2023) organised by Deutscher Bauernverband e.V., Stephan Kruse, Director Farming Vion Germany, engaged in discussions on the future of pig farming. The event was themed "Advancing Pig Farming - Possibilities and Paths," bringing together key stakeholders, including representatives from politics, food retail, meat companies, feed industry and farming associations to seek solutions to industry challenges.  💡 Stephan Kruse's warning about the consequences of ongoing structural changes in the supply chain resonated with all participants. There's a collective understanding that the entire industry is grappling with these challenges, and the policies in place aren't offering substantial support.  However, there's a unanimous call for German policymakers to step up and provide solutions and planning security for the pig farming sector. Because the market is segmenting, there will no longer be uniform production, but each pig farmer will see for himself which husbandry options suit him best.     The future of pig farming is at a crossroads, and collaborative efforts are key. April 23rd 2024, Canterbury Curious Cockies, Waipara, Canterbury Today the group visited sheep and beef properties working their way through a dry autumn. Both were leasing from families, successful with winter crops, trading livestock classes, getting stock water sorted for higher flow rates and staying away from alternative fertilisers. One admitted all development and trading costs came from cash flow, hence no interest to pay. The other had diligently worked through an array of on-farm fertiliser experiments to find accuracy and reliability. There was debate over whether lucerne or raphno was the better crop to lift summer production. Upon asking older members of Curious Cockie Club what would they change 20 years ago, all mentioned adding interventions such as genetics, crops, trees. None spoke of changing management.  Both farmers spoke of fodder crops saving them, and despite both admitting grazing management issues neither were exploring how to fix them. How often do farmers use “safe” industry interventions instead of questioning and enhancing their own skills and judgements?  

The key driver for the Berry Gardens trial site is to ‘Drive yields and profitability by growing varieties the best way’. Our trial site already has an international reputation for the quality of its growing and data and this is something we wish to strengthen over the next three years. We will be doing things differently for 2024. We are involving our agronomists and a some expert BGG members to help decide what (why,where & when) will be trialed. Its early days but its already its clear that we will be moving to 75% agronomic trials and 25% variety trials, whereas traditionally it was more of a variety trial site. We are focusing on how agronomically we can help our members maximize yields and minimize labour & costs, while delighting the consumer with high quality fruit. We are developing some innovative software which will allow growers and breeders to instantly access 'live' data and this will also be rolled out to our members for On Farm Trials - all coming in 2024! Nothing beats actually meeting in person! Gewis provides information about the optimal timing for using a specific crop protection product. It takes into account the optimal operating conditions for the active substance and the current weather conditions. It can be used for single products or mixtures for various crops. When the weather conditions are favorable for a specific product, it indicates that the dosage can be reduced without a loss of effectiveness.
