What did I learn after the first Kumho TCR World Tour in Sydney? That is better to have one less camera and one more overtaking. Basically content is what really matters for spectators. And when I say content I don’t mean the way you broadcast the content, but what really happens on the field of play, in this case a piece of tarmac. Here in Sydney we had three hyper spectacular races and all the people concerned by the series (spectators, media & stakeholders) were super enthusiastic. Quite often in the broadcast industry we are so much focused on the technical side of the content (number of cameras, of special cameras, of EVS…) that we forget the story side of the content that is in the end what really matters for spectators. #broadcast #motorsport WSC

I watch lots of sports. There are not many where I struggle to have a good conversation. My fiancée Stephanie would call it a bit of a problem. Until last summer, cycling was one sport about which I struggled to form an opinion. Steph and I then sat down to watch the first season of Netflix’s #Unchained, and we fell down the #TourDeFrance funnel exactly as designed. Subsequently, we watched every stage of the tour, and we're looking forward to the start of the 2024 edition on Saturday. For all the BTS sports documentaries, #Unchained stands out. The hook is the drama and emotion, but you stay to learn more about the sport, the teams and the cyclists. Not falling into the trap of telling a story stage by stage, but narratives told one at a time without spoilers. Brilliantly executed with lots of moments where you become animated on the couch. Albeit with some dubious dubbing/subtitles, I’m unsure which of the two is correct. The race itself is challenging from a broadcast and commentary perspective. Multiple narratives are happening in more places than one, narratives with comparable interest - You can’t just follow the ball, and the pitch is moving; it's a different piece of road every day. It's also often not about what’s happening at the front. The story is well told, with the on-screen graphics playing a big part in keeping a viewer informed. This same challenge presents an opportunity for an insightful app, a digital platform that, along with Masters, leads the industry. It's so good. There's no agenda here, just some credit and thanks to many people I’ve never met. And to say if you've not fallen down this funnel, I recommend it. There's no other sport like it.
