India’s 1.4 billion people make it the most populous country in the world, but with an average age of 29, it has one of the youngest populations globally. 18 million first time voters are taking their first electoral steps as voting citizens of India. What do young people really want from their leaders? What are their dreams and aspirations? How do they imagine the future of their nation and their place in it? These and many more such questions intrigued us. So we did a simple thing. Talked to them. We spoke to 60 young women and queer voters from 20 states and 42 Parliamentary constituencies. These are from cities like Mumbai and Bengaluru but also those who lived in villages in Bastar, Kalahandi, Palasa, Anantnag and Vadakara among others. They are students, migrant workers, and development professionals etc. The diverse voices that we captured were strong, assertive and brimming with new ideas. They quilt the idea of a new India. This post comes a bit late - apologies! I had the privilege to collate data and prepare visualisations about gender norms in India from all 5 rounds of the National Health and Family Survey, under the guidance of Professor Ashwini Deshpande. Working with Professor has been a real treat because her seasoned advise never fails to bring in a most fundamental yet innovative dimension to the analysis. Through this article published in Scroll.in, twelve key charts display trends in indicators of social norms at the level of Indian states, over time. There is great variation in norms among states as well as the rate at which women's autonomy is changing (mostly improving). While there has been great progress in recent times, women's autonomy in percentage terms is still quite low and slow to shift on certain fronts and in many regions. As a feminist and economist-in-training, it was an amazing experience for me to observe these trends first-hand, in the numbers. It got me quite excited - Indian society is moving forward in women's empowerment after all. It may be sluggish at times and non-uniform, but there's progress. Hope to contribute further to the research on gender equality and promote the discourse on improving gender norms in our society, with much more nuance!
